Green Bay Volleyball Falls in Weekend Finale to Bradley

By: Stephen Wagner

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Competing in its third match in two days, the Green Bay volleyball team concluded play at the Rocket Invitational against Bradley. The Phoenix fell 3-0 (27-25, 25-11, 25-18) to Braves for its first loss in pool play but managed to have junior Megan Powers (Glendale, Ariz.) and senior Jillian Bauer (Verona, Wis.) named to the Rocket Invitational All-Tournament team for their efforts throughout the weekend. The Braves improved the 3-0 on the season following the victory, while Green Bay moved to 2-1.

Green Bay picked up two wins on Friday to open the Rocket Invitational and seemed to carry the success found in the opening day of the invitational into the first set of the match, battling Bradley and alternating points starting with the 10th and ending with the 27th, but ultimately the Braves proved to be too much, claiming the set 27-25.

The Braves' momentum carried over into the second and third set after picking up the tight first game, convincingly claiming set two 25-11, and jumping out to an early, 12-5, lead in the third before picking up the set, 25-18, and subsequent match victory.

“I thought we came out competitive at the start of the match and played hard,” head coach Sean Burdette said. “We made some errors in the first set but were right there. We just didn't close it out when we had the chance. In sets 2 & 3 we got tentative and that led to too many unforced errors. We started to get back in a rhythm in the 3 set but it was a little late. Hopefully this is a good learning experience and we continue to grow from it. Overall, this was a good weekend for Phoenix volleyball.”

Powers led the Phoenix with seven kills on the day paired with four digs, while senior Emily Riese (Fond du Lac, Wis.) directed Green Bay's offense and collected 21 assists.

The Phoenix women will return to action next weekend when the team travels to Manhattan, Kan., for the K-State Invitational where Green Bay will have matchups with Kansas State, UNLV and California.
