GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Six Phoenix players managed to find the back of the net in tonight's match with Chicago State, aiding to the 7-0 clean sheet victory over the Cougars. Sydney Born led the offensive attack for the Phoenix and managed to sneak a pair of goals past the Chicago State (0-6-0) keeper for her first two strikes of the season.
The lights were turned on for the first time in the 2015 season, seemingly giving the Phoenix's (2-4-0) offense and defense the extra push needed for a pair of season firsts, a seven-goal performance from the offense and a clean sheet for the defense.
After an earlier attempt by the centerback was turned away, Born began the scoring barrage for the Phoenix in the 17th minute when she elevated above the defense to bury home a header off the corner kick from Devan Schultz. It's Born's first goal of the season and Schultz' first assist of the year thanks to a beautiful connection.
Just under five minutes later in the 21st minute, Green Bay would increase its advantage to two goals courtesy of a 20-yard strike from Maggie Fuller. The sophomore struck the ball perfectly and sailed one over the outstretched hands of the Cougars' goalkeeper, while Heidi Hartmann was credited with the assist after playing it to Fuller.
With the goals coming early and often for the Phoenix, it wouldn't take long for the team's striker to put her name in the scoring summary. Hartmann raced out ahead of the Chicago State backline and found the back of the net to put her squad up 3-0 in the 30th minute, recording her fifth goal of the young season.
Green Bay would come out in the second half even stronger than the first, scoring three goals in the first 15 minutes of play. The first strike came in the 49th minute courtesy Leah Nitardy when the sophomore found herself in a one-on-one situation on the right side, then used her right foot for an arcing ball that was too much for the keeper to handle.
Born would add her second goal of the day in the 54th minute, extending Green Bay's lead to five goals. The 59th minute would see Hayley Fowle loft one out of the keeper's reach from 30 yards out for the third goal in less than 15 minutes to open the half.
The exclamation point on Green Bay's victory came off the foot of Jessica Roberts in the 67th minute after Roberts worked through the backline and baited the keeper too far out, allowing Roberts to sneak by and bury the final Phoenix goal.
The Green Bay defense thwarted CSU's few scoring chances, allowing only three shots to be taken by the Cougars with Phoenix goalkeeper Kelly Kent stopping both balls that were on target.
Green Bay's 47 shots on the night, 32 of which were on-goal, ranks second on the program's all-time list for a single game. The only game higher came in 1990 against Marion when the Phoenix tallied 48 on the night.
The Phoenix will look to make it two in a row when it returns to the pitch this Sunday (Sept. 13) evening for a 7 p.m. kick-off against Eastern Washington.
