CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's soccer team opened its 2015 Horizon League slate this afternoon, traveling to Chicago Ill., for a matchup with UIC at Flames Field. UIC (4-2-1, 1-0-0) controlled play for the majority of the match, working its way to a 2-0 victory over Green Bay (1-5-1, 0-1-0).
Green Bay was unable to get any solid production from its offense in the conference opener, only recording three shots in the match compared to the Flames' 18.
UIC tallied its first goal inside to 10-minute mark against the Green Bay defense, as the Flames' Jorge Alvarez struck mesh in the ninth minute of play after Elias El Metennani played the ball across the box to Alvarez, allowing him to sneak it past Green Bay keeper Kyle Ihn before he could cover enough ground to get back.
Alvarez went on to add another goal in the 52nd minute, his third of the season, to increase the Flames' advantage to two goals with time winding down. The Phoenix made an effort to deplete the deficit, with its only three shots of the contest coming in the final 25 minutes of the match.
William Nordenstrom, Audi Jepson and Jordan Dover each logged shots for Green Bay in the match, with the lone shot on goal coming from the foot of Nordenstrom in the 66th minute. Despite allowing two goals, the Green Bay defense played well, turning away 16 shots with Ihn picking up seven saves.
The Phoenix will continue league play next Saturday (Sept. 26) when it travels to Dayton, Ohio, for a matchup with Wright State.
