GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Playing in its second game in as many nights, the Green Bay volleyball team dropped the second game of its three-game weekend set to Cleveland State on Friday night (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) at Woodling Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Phoenix were paced by sophomore Lydia DeWeese, who continued her strong play this season with a team-high 11 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, but could not generate enough offense against a Vikings squad that was playing at home and playing hot, having won nine consecutive sets, and four-straight matches overall.
Green Bay jumped out to an early 9-7 edge in the first set, but Cleveland State responded on an 8-1 run that included three Phoenix errors and three kills by Vikings' freshman Alexis Middlebrooks to grab a 15-10 lead. Samantha Anthon ended the run with a kill of her own, but CSU continued to keep the pressure on later in the first, tallying a .229 team hitting percentage while holding Green Bay to .119.
The Phoenix alternated early points in each of the next two sets, however Cleveland State mounted momentum-changing rallies in both to win its home-opener, 3-0.
Senior setter Emily Riese provided yet another double-double performance on the night (team-high 29 assists/11 digs), while freshman Austyn Everingham (team-high 14 digs) was strong on the defensive end for Green Bay, who fell to 10-5, 1-1 in the Horizon League.
Reigning Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week Christina Toth recorded a team-high 14 kills on a .444 hitting percentage for the Vikings.
