GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Sophomore forward Alex Zeller scored early and senior Heidi Hartmann scored late, as the Green Bay Phoenix women's soccer team not only won its first game of the 2015 season – a 2-1 decision over North Dakota –but gave first-year coach Kimberly Brandao her first victory as a collegiate head coach in the process.
Making just her second start, freshman keeper Kelly Kent also picked up her first career victory in net, saving 13 shots out of a possible 14 chances.
Traveling to the Dakotas for the second time already this season, Green Bay was able to get on the board first when Zeller found the back of the net in the sixth-minute, maneuvering around several defenders and placing the ball in the lower-left corner past UND goalie Olivia Swenson. The goal was the first of the year for Zeller.
The scoring continued in the 71st minute, when the Phoenix's Hartmann snuck her second of the season past Swenson from the top of the box off a loose ball. North Dakota would answer with a goal by Andrea Hyduke just four minutes later in the 75th minute, but it proved too little, too late.
Green Bay was outshot by UND 27-21 in the game, despite a game-high nine shots from Hartmann, of which seven were on target.
The Phoenix will continue its weekend roadtrip Sunday afternoon in Vermillion, S.D., where they will take on South Dakota (0-4) at the USD Soccer Complex at 12 p.m.
Green Bay has faced the Coyotes on two separate occasions, with the Phoenix picking up the only victory in the series (1-0-1). The most recent meeting came on Sept. 9, 2012 and ended in Green Bay's favor, 3-1.
