GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's soccer team got two goals from Heidi Hartmann, including a game-tying header from the senior in the 77th minute, but South Dakota's Sammie Villwock completed a hat-trick in the opening minutes of overtime to down Green Bay 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in Vermillion, S.D.
After opening the scoring on Friday night against North Dakota, the Phoenix (1-4-0) struck first once again in the seventh minute on Hartmann's third goal of the 2015 campaign, after the Plymouth, Minn., native beat her defender, then Coyote goalie Sydney Hardin on a shot in the left corner.
South Dakota (2-4-0) responded by scoring three unanswered goals, beginning with a strike from Corey Strang in the top right of the goal box when she got one past Green Bay goalie Kelly Kent in the 28th minute.
With the score knotted at one at the half, Villwock broke the 1-1 tie in the 60th minute, and would score a second time just five minutes later, giving the home team a 3-1 advantage in the latter stages of the second half.
As quickly as they found themselves down, however; the Phoenix answered. In the 75th minute, sophomore Leah Nitardy rebounded a defensive deflection to capitalize on her first goal of the season, and Hartmann buried a header off a pass from Nicole Piette two-minutes, eight-seconds later to even the score.
Green Bay threatened to complete its comeback on a late chance by Mariah Katzenberger, but her effort was thwarted by Hardin, sending the game into extra time.
Six minutes later, Villwock used her left foot to complete her trifecta, giving South Dakota the overtime victory.
Green Bay held the advantage in shots-on-goal over the Coyotes, firing 12 on target compared to South Dakota's 10. However, South Dakota owned the edge in corner kicks after taking eight compared to Green Bay's six.
The Phoenix return home to Aldo Santaga Stadium for two matches next weekend, where it will face Chicago State on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., and Eastern Washington on Sunday evening at 7 p.m.
