YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's basketball team concluded the weekend in Youngstown, Ohio, taking on Youngstown State at the Beeghly Center in the third game of its Horizon League slate. The Phoenix was able to make a few clutch stops in the final minutes of the game to hold off the rallying Penguins (12-3, 3-1), 68-60. The Phoenix moved to 13-2 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in Horizon League play after securing its 10th straight victory this evening.
Green Bay trailed early in the game, a deficit that worked its way to as much as nine points with seven minutes, 11 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The Phoenix then began a furious rally to overtake the Penguins and end the half with an 18-8 run sparked by back-to-back jumpers and a three-pointer from Allie LeClaire. Green Bay was then able to head to the locker room holding a one-point lead, 35-34.
The third quarter was dominated by the Phoenix, rattling off 19 points for its highest scoring quarter of the game and holding Youngstown State to only seven.
After trailing 54-41, the Penguins rallied in the fourth quarter and lowered the deficit to as little as six points with 32 seconds to play, but were unable to pull even with the Phoenix. LeClaire hit two free throws with 30 seconds left to secure the 68-60 victory for Green Bay.
LeClaire led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-14 from the field and 2-of-5 from long range. The guard also tallied one assist and one steal in 36 minutes. Senior Kaili Lukan and junior Sam Terry were also in double figures for the Phoenix, adding 12 and 11 points, respectively. Terry's 11 points is a season high, besting her 10-point performance against South Dakota State.
Junior Mehryn Kraker filled up the stat sheet, accumulating nine points, eight rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes.
Green Bay will now venture back home for back-to-back games within the friendly confines of the Kress Center, when the Phoenix welcomes Valparaiso on Thursday at 7 p.m. and UIC on Saturday at 1 p.m. Saturday's game with UIC will be the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board Trading Card Giveaway.
