YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – A hot shooting performance by the opponent gave the Green Bay men's basketball team its first Horizon League loss of the season on Saturday evening, 103-93 at Youngstown State inside the Beeghly Center.
The Phoenix (10-6, 3-1 HL) would lead for only 2:10 of the game, as the host Penguins (7-10, 2-2 HL) shot over 50 percent (50.8 percent, 32-of-63) from the field and from the three-point line (55 percent, 11-of-20) to snap Green Bay's four-game winning streak. Four players reached double figures for Green Bay, but it was the 44-point performance by YSU's Cameron Morse that stole the show.
Charles Cooper had a good bounce back game, finishing with 19 points and five rebounds, while Jordan Fouse recorded his fourth double-double of the season, tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds. Turner Botz added 13 points and five rebounds while Khalil Small finished with 11 points.
Green Bay would try to turn up the pressure in the second half in hopes of mounting another comeback, but the Penguins went 6-for-9 from beyond the arc in the second half to stay out front. The Phoenix meanwhile, would finish just 8-for-29 from long range in the game.
After Small knocked down a three-pointer to start the second half, YSU would go on an 11-0 run to go up double-digits and would go on to lead by double figures for the final 16 minutes of the game up until the final horn.
The loss drops the Phoenix to 3-1 in conference, leaving Detroit (3-0) and Valparaiso (2-0) as the only remaining undefeated in the league. The two teams face off on Sunday, Jan. 10.
Green Bay will play its third and fourth games of its current five-game road trip, traveling down to the Windy City to face UIC next on Thursday, Jan. 14. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion.
