No. 22 Green Bay Drops First League Game to Oakland, 58-56

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The 22nd-ranked Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team took to the Kress Center floor on Thursday night, falling 58-56 to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The loss marks Green Bay's first setback at home this season (8-1), while snapping its active 14-game winning streak dating back to Nov. 28 against Rutgers in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Despite playing to a 27-27 tie at the half, the Phoenix (17-3, 7-1 HL) struggled from the floor all night, as the Golden Grizzlies limited Green Bay to just 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the floor and 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from beyond the arc on the evening.

Oakland junior Sinclair Russell scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, as the Golden Grizzlies (12-7, 4-4 HL) jumped out to a 10-point lead early in the final quarter, 48-38, and ultimately held on for the victory.

Sophomore Jessica Lindstrom contributed a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds for the Phoenix, while helping spur Green Bay's late comeback. After trailing by double-digits, the Superior, Wis., native hit a 3-pointer, stole two passes and shook free for the game-tying layup with 3:02 to play, then helped the Phoenix retake the lead, 53-51, after a key offensive rebound.

Green Bay used a 15-3 run over a six-minute, 37 second stretch in the fourth quarter to take its first lead since the game was 38-37 on a layup by junior Tesha Buck with 2 minutes, 22 seconds remaining.

After Oakland's Taylor Jones answered with a 3-pointer, it was Lindstrom again who found her way to the basket to knot the score up at 55 in a game that featured six ties and 11 lead changes.

The Phoenix received a stop on the other end; however, after junior Sam Terry split a pair at the line, Jones again hit the go-ahead shot in the final 30 seconds to hand Green Bay just its second Horizon League defeat since the start of last season.

The Phoenix had been 22-1 against conference opponents in the previous 23 meetings, with its last loss coming to Oakland on Feb. 4 of last season, 70-67.

Green Bay will return home on Saturday afternoon against the Detroit Titans (9-10, 5-3). Tip from the Kress Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
