MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Despite all five starters finishing in double figures and a 63 percent shooting effort, the Green Bay men's basketball team dropped a tough 95-94 decision to Milwaukee on Friday night at the UWM Panther Arena.
Green Bay (13-9, 5-4 HL) had a look from Carrington Love with 18 seconds left in a tie game, but the ball rimmed out and fell into the hands of the Panthers (15-7, 6-3 HL). Jordan Johnson then converted an and-one with five seconds left in the game before the final free throw attempt from Akeem Springs was missed and fumbled around until the final horn sounded.
Love led all scorers in the game with 24 points in his return to his hometown of Milwaukee, while his senior teammate Jordan Fouse registered his 16th career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The 20-plus point performance from Love marks the fifth-straight game he's hit that benchmark and Fouse's double-double was his second straight after pouring in 30 and 14.
The 63.3 percent (38-of-60) shooting performance is the highest-ever in a single game in program history with that many shot attempts. The Phoenix also shot 73.3 percent in the second half alone, missing only eight shots out of its 30 attempts, enjoying a stretch where it made 11 of 13 shot attempts.
Charles Cooper (13 points), Kenneth Lowe (12 points) and Khalil Small (11 points) joined Love and Fouse in double figures for Green Bay. It's the second-straight game all five starters have scored and just the second time this season it's done so.
Green Bay also notched 90-plus points for the fourth-straight game and the ninth time this year. The 95 points by the Panthers are the most they've scored in a league game this year.
Following a finish from Lowe with 9:23 on the clock, the Phoenix would lead the game the rest of the way until Johnson's converted and-one with six seconds left. Milwaukee led at the half 47-41 and made its last seven shots entering the break.
Green Bay will play its second and third road games of its current five-game stretch next weekend. The Phoenix will visit Northern Kentucky on Thursday (Feb. 4) and Wright State next Saturday (Feb. 6). Tip at NKU is set fo r6 p.m. CT.
