CHICAGO, Illinois (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Taking the floor away from home for the first time in five games, the Green Bay women's basketball team took to Chicago, Ill., for a matchup with UIC at the UIC Pavilion. Aided by Mehryn Kraker's 15-point second half, the Phoenix (22-3, 12-1) was able to pull away from the Flames (12-13, 3-11) and secure a 58-40 victory.
Green Bay enjoyed a quick start on Thursday night, working its way to an 18-6 advantage with 1:07 remaining in the opening quarter of play. The Flames, however, used the remaining time to chip away at the Phoenix lead by scoring the next five points to trail 18-11 after 10 minutes.
The Phoenix continued its struggles in the second quarter, allowing UIC to go on an 11-2 run over the first 6 minutes, 12 seconds to collect its first lead of the game, 22-20. Green Bay managed to regain the lead and head into the locker room holding a three-point advantage, 27-24.
Green Bay took command of the game in the third quarter of play with some help from junior Mehryn Kraker, who scored 10 points in the quarter to help Green Bay outscore UIC 18-6 and take a 45-30 lead into the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter saw Green Bay cool off a bit in terms of offensive production, but the defense sealed the victory by holding UIC to only 10 points and ensuring a 58-40 victory.
Kraker led all scorers with 17 points on Thursday night at the UIC Pavilion. The guard also collected seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block in 30 minutes.
Sophomore Jessica Lindstrom pulled down double-digit rebounds for the fifth-straight game this evening, securing 10 on the night to pair along with seven points in 30 minutes. Allie LeClaire and Kaili Lukan were Green Bay's other two double-digit contributors aside from Kraker, scoring 10 points apiece in 25 minutes and 37 minutes on the floor, respectively.
Green Bay will continue Horizon League play on Saturday, Feb. 18 in Valparaiso, Ind., when the Phoenix tips off against Valparaiso at the ARC at 1:30 p.m. (CT).
