GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Two days removed from a dominant second-half performance against Youngstown State, the Green Bay men's basketball team turned in another defensive gem over the final 20 minutes to earn its third-straight win, downing Cleveland State, 78-61, on Monday night at the Resch Center.
Guard Carrington Love scored a game-high 15 points, five assists and a career-high seven steals, and forward Jordan Fouse (12 pts/10 reb) added his ninth double-double of the year to give Green Bay a two-headed senior attack. After trailing by as many as nine points late in the first half, the Phoenix held the Vikings to just 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from the field in the second half – including 1-of-13 from beyond the arc – before eventually pulling away.
Green Bay has now outscored its opponents by a whopping 48 points (104-56) after halftime over its last two contests, improving to 10-2 at home and a perfect 6-0 on Mondays.
Junior transfers Charles Cooper and Jamar Hurdle added 15 points apiece and both ended the evening 6-of-9 from the floor, as Green Bay (18-11, 10-6 HL) had four players record double-figures for the third-consecutive game. It has now collected 10 Horizon League victories in 2015-16, the fifth year in a row it has reached at least that many conference wins.
Cleveland State (8-21, 3-13 HL) came in having lost eight of its last nine league games, but edged Green Bay by a pair in the opening half, 38-36, thanks to 53.8 percent (15-of-28) shooting, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range.
The tides turned after the break; however, as the Phoenix defense frustrated the Vikings offense for a number of stretches, at one point forcing CSU into a 1-of-16 shooting drought. Green Bay on the other hand shot just 16-of-29 from the charity stripe and 4-of-19 overall from downtown, but made up for it by forcing 18 turnovers while outscoring Cleveland State by 16 points in the paint (40-24) and 15-4 on the fast break.
Green Bay will dawn throwback jerseys in its next match-up, when it meets UIC on Friday night at 7 p.m. on Bud Light / Alumni Night. Fans interested in purchasing tickets can call the Phoenix ticket office at (920) 465-2625 for more information.
A victory against the Flames would tie the Phoenix's season best four-game winning streak at the Resch Center, previously accomplished from Dec. 15- Jan. 4.
