GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay knocked down a season-high 14 3-pointers on Thursday night at Resch Center, defeating Wright State 78-61 for its seventh-straight win and to remain perfect atop the Horizon League standings at 5-0. The Phoenix (11-6, 5-0 HL) actually made more 3s than it did field goals (10) inside the arc in the victory, which gave the program just its third all-time 5-0 start to open Horizon League play.
Warren Jones was the catalyst for Green Bay, scoring a season-high 19 points on a 5-for-6 shooting performance from 3. Jones also dished out three assists and was key in giving the Phoenix 46 bench points, which marks the fifth time in the last seven games the team has scored 40 or more points off the bench.
Green Bay trailed early on 9-6, before going on a 12-0 run that included three made 3s by three different players. The Phoenix would never trail again and would lead by as many as 24 points in the second half, while it scored 24 of the first 36 points in the second half.
Charles Cooper continued his impressive play in league, recording 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Cooper has now scored in double figures in all five league games this year and 12 games overall on the season, while scoring 16 points or more in four of his five league games.
The 14 made 3-pointers ties the program record for 3s made in a game, which has happened five times now. The most recent occurrence was Jan. 24, 2009, when the Phoenix made 14 at Valparaiso.
Junior Khalil Small also added double figures, scoring 11 points and snagging eight rebounds. Jamar Hurdle and Turner Botz each chipped in nine.
The Phoenix defense held Wright State (11-7, 2-3 HL) to its second-lowest point total of the season at 61. The Raiders shot just 25.9 percent (7-27) from 3 and committed 15 turnovers.
Green Bay is now 6-1 at home this season and has won seven of its last eight games against Wright State. The Phoenix also scored 78 points when it beat the Raiders to capture the Horizon League Tournament Championship last season.
