FAIRBORN, Ohio – The Green Bay volleyball team was handed its first loss in Horizon League play this season, falling in five sets to Wright State on Friday night at McLin Gymnasium. The Phoenix (8-8, 4-1 HL) took the first two sets over the Raiders (8-10, 2-3 HL), but the home team rallied to win the final three sets including a 15-11 third-set victory to seal the win.
Green Bay fell behind 9-4 early in the dramatic fifth set, but rallied late to find themselves down 13-11 and searching for its second-straight 5-0 start in league play. The Raiders' Megan Hopkins recorded back-to-back kills to give Wright State the match win, the first loss in five sets by the Phoenix this season.
Taylor Wolf recorded three-straight kills with her team trailing 13-8, but WSU was able to stop the run late.
The Phoenix won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-21, seemingly taking control of its first Horizon League road match of the season. Wright State, which knocked off league-favorite Cleveland State last weekend, won the third set 25-16 and fourth set 25-21 to force the fifth.
Green Bay was led by Wolf with 16 kills and
Lydia DeWeese with 14.
Jessica Wolf added nine kills, while DeWeese and Wolf combined for 12 blocks on the other side of the net. Maddie Yoss recorded 48 assists for the second-straight match and added 18 digs for another double-double.
Vanessa Buman led the Phoenix with 19 digs.
The Phoenix will look to earn the split this weekend, visiting IUPUI tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. CT. The Jaguars knocked off Milwaukee in straight sets in Friday night.
