CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay Volleyball team fell in the championship match of the Horizon League Tournament for the second-straight year on Sunday to host and No. 1 seed Cleveland State, 3-0.
Green Bay (15-15) would jump out to a 5-2 lead to start the match behind a pair of kills each for freshman
Taylor Wolf and senior
Lydia DeWeese. A 4-1 run from Cleveland State would tie the set at 6-6. After some back-and-forth the Vikings would string together an additional 5-1 run to give Cleveland State a 12-9 lead. The Phoenix would respond with three straight points to tie the match. However, Cleveland State would go on another 5-2 run to take a 22-16 lead. The Phoenix would answer with a 6-2 run of their own, but it was too late as Cleveland State took the set 25-22.
Set two would start evenly, with Cleveland State holding a slight 9-8 lead prior to going on a 4-0 run. Each team would side out on the next 8 points, but a 4-1 Cleveland State run would extend their lead to 20-13. They would take 5 of the next 7 points, winning the set 25-16.
Cleveland State would open the third set on a 4-0 run, eventually extending their lead to 10-3. Green Bay would not go quietly, going on 4-1 and 6-1 runs during the set, cutting the deficit to 18-15. Green Bay would go on another late run, this one 3-1 to bring the score to 23-20. Cleveland State wouldn't be stopped though, going on to win the set and the match 25-21.
DeWeese collected her 1,000
th career kill in the third set. She becomes just the 5
th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Taylor Wolf and
Maddie Yoss were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
