ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Green Bay volleyball team dropped a pair of tough matches on Saturday at the Michigan Invitational, falling 3-0 to Butler in the morning before coming up short 3-1 in the nightcap against 19
th-ranked and tournament hosts Michigan. The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak for the Phoenix, which finishes the weekend 1-2 after beating New Hampshire on Friday night.
Butler 3, Green Bay 0
The Phoenix (4-2) came up just short in all three sets against the Bulldogs, losing 25-23, 25-23 and 29-27. Green Bay led 22-21 late in the first set, before Butler converted four of the next five kills in the set to win.
The story was the same in the second set, as Green Bay again led 22-21 late, and again the Bulldogs won four of the next five points to secure the 2-0 lead. The Phoenix showed resiliency in the third set, finding itself down 24-19 and facing five match points before winning five points in a row and tying the set at 24-24.
Green Bay then took control with a 26-25 lead, but Butler scored the next two points to go in front 27-26. The Phoenix would tie it at 27-27 in a dramatic set, but the Bulldogs stole the next two points to secure the match and hand the Phoenix its first loss of the season.
Lydia DeWeese hit .581 and totaled a team-high 20 kills, her highest total since Sept. 16 of last season against Toledo.
Taylor Wolf added 10 kills and her older sister
Jessica Wolf totaled six.
The Phoenix recorded more team kills, digs and assists than Butler, but the Big East member totaled 13 blocks and five aces.
(19) Michigan 3, Green Bay 1
The tournament hosts, which finished the weekend with three victories, proved to be too strong in the end. Green Bay dropped the opening set 25-20, before evening things up in the second set with a 25-23 victory. The Phoenix jumped out to a 16-11 lead and held off Michigan the rest of the way, with T. Wolf spiking home the set-winning kill.
Michigan came back with a vengeance in the third set, easily winning 25-13. The home team closed things out with another convincing win in the fourth set, 25-16.
T. Wolf led the Phoenix with 11 kills and five digs, while DeWeese and
Roberta Todd each added nine kills.
Jessica Wolf tallied seven kills and five blocks, while
Ashley Sledge added seven blocks of her own.
Michigan hit .416 while Green Bay hit only .216 in the match.
Vanessa Buman was named to the All-Tournament Team for her strong efforts defensively.
The Phoenix will now prepare for next weekend's challenge trip to Utah, where the team will face a pair of ranked teams and another receiving votes at the Utah Classic in Salt Lake City on Sept. 8-9.
