SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Green Bay volleyball team hung tough with SEC-foe and previously-ranked Missouri on Friday night in its first match at the Utah Classic, but ultimately fell in four sets 3-1 to the Tigers at the Huntsman Center. Green Bay (4-3) loss three sets by a combined eight points to the Tigers (4-4), dropping its third-straight match, all be it against stiff competition in back to back weekends.
With the match tied at one set apiece after the Tigers won the opening set (25-22) and Green Bay answered in the second (25-16), Missouri was able to run away late in the third set to gain control of the match at 2-1. The Phoenix led 19-18, but the pesky Tigers won seven of the final 11 points in the set to steal the win 25-23.
Green Bay led again late in the fourth set with a 21-20 advantage, but a pair of kills by Missouri and a pair of errors by the Phoenix allowed the Tigers to come away with the 25-22 fourth-set and match-clinching victory.
The Phoenix attack was led by
Taylor Wolf with 13 kills, while
Lydia DeWeese and
Ashley Sledge each added 10 in the effort. DeWeese and Sledge also added five blocks a piece, while
Maddie Yoss controlled the offense with 45 assists.
Vanessa Buman continued her strong play defensively, leading the team with a match-high 19 digs.
The Phoenix now looks forward to Saturday at the Utah Classic, which pits the team against two ranked opponents in 19
th-ranked Utah and 15
th-ranked San Diego.
