GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The men's soccer team welcomed Oakland to Aldo Santaga Stadium on Saturday for its annual Alumni Night and did not disappoint the squad's former members as the team defeated the Golden Grizzlies (3-8-0, 1-3-0) 4-2. It is the first time since the 2006 season that the Phoenix has opened league play with a perfect 4-0 record.
"We got the result we wanted tonight," head coach
Jeremy Bonomo said. "Oakland is very good, picked to win the league this year by the head coaches. I'm very proud of our guys. They prepared all week and executed tonight."
Each of Green Bay's (5-2-2, 4-0-0) goals on the evening came from a different member of the squad, with
Robleh Omar,
Tomer Zloczower,
Audi Jepson and
Cody Newton each finding the back of the net for the Phoenix.
Green Bay was the first to strike in the match after Zloczower played a perfect ball to the middle to find Omar attacking for a header in the 18th minute. Oakland responded with the equalizer later in the half when the Golden Grizzlies' Austin Ricci collected a deflection in Green Bay's box and was able to create space and beat the keeper right.
After returning to the field in the second half with the game knotted at one-all, Green Bay went on the attack in search of an advantage and didn't have to wait long to find one, as Zloczower broke away on a pass from Jepson to beat the goalie right and lead things 2-1. Jepson added what seemed to be an insurance goal in the 63rd minute after a perfectly placed penalty kick offered no chance to be blocked and granted Green Bay a 3-1 lead.
Ricci found mesh again in the 79th minute for Oakland and lowered the deficit to just one goal with around 10 minutes to play.
As the Golden Grizzlies continued to press, Green Bay did not back down and kept pressure on the Golden Grizzlies defense.
Cody Newton scored his first goal of the season in transition after Jepson pushed the ball up to Zloczower on the right side who was able to redirect it as Newton was attacking.
Each team recorded 11 shots in the contest but Green Bay proved to be much more accurate with its attempts, placing seven shots on goal compared to Oakland's three. Both teams attempted two corner kicks on the evening. There were a total of nine yellow cards issued in the match, four to Green Bay and five to Oakland.
Speaking to the balance of the Phoenix attack, eight members of the team placed a shot on the mark while just two Golden Grizzlies tallied on-goal attempts in the 90 minutes. Jepson and Zloczower both finished with one goal and two assists in the match.
Green Bay is back on the road next weekend when the squad travels to Chicago, Ill., for a matchup with UIC.
