Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls 3-1 at UIC, Handed First League Defeat of Season

CHICAGO (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's soccer team was handed its first Horizon League defeat of the season on Saturday night by UIC, snapping its four-game unbeaten streak in 2017 with the 3-1 defeat in the Windy City. The game was delayed 30 minutes after lightning was in the area, before the two teams played in the wet and windy conditions starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Phoenix (5-3-2, 4-1-0 HL) entered Saturday alone atop the Horizon League, owning a perfect 12 points in four games, but the defending Horizon League champion Flames (5-5-2, 3-2-0 HL) netted two first-half goals and a third in the second half to earn the three points. Green Bay is now tied with Wright State, which it beat 2-1 on Sept. 23 in Dayton, for first place with 12 points and a 4-1-0 record.

"UIC deserved to win tonight. Though we were highly competitive, we were asleep for a few spells and that was the difference.  A polished, perennial playoff team like UIC made us pay for it. Hopefully this serves as a learning experience for our young and in some ways, naive team," head coach Jeremy Bonomo said.

Marcos Bautista scored the lone goal for the Phoenix in the 90th minute, when his penalty kick was initially saved before he powered the rebound into the back of the net past the prone goalkeeper.

Green Bay will visit Wisconsin on Tuesday night (7 p.m.) for a nonconference match before returning to Horizon League play next Saturday night, hosting Cleveland State at 7 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
