Team Notes
CARRIED BY KHALILÂ Â Â
Senior Khalil Small has been the leader of the Phoenix this season, both on and off the court. Small leads the Phoenix in scoring with 19.9 PPG and rebounding with 7.2 RPG in HL play. The Chicago-native also leads the team in 3-pointers made (18), minutes per game (37.5 MPG), assists (36) and has scored in double-figures in all but one Horizon League game this season. He's also scored 20-plus points six times in league play and is averaging 2.7 offensive rebounds per game. Small ranks second in the Horizon League in scoring this season and is fourth in minutes per game.
GETTING DEFENSIVEÂ Â Â
The Green Bay defense was locked in against Cleveland State in Thursday's 66-44 victory, allowing its third-fewest points against a league opponent in the Horizon League era. It's the fewest points the Phoenix has allowed under the leadership of head coach Linc Darner and the 27.7 percent CSU shot is the lowest field goal percentage Green Bay has allowed against a Horizon League opponent since Mar. 5, 2013, when GB held Milwaukee to 26.5 percent shooting in a 62-46 victory.Â
AT THE HALF: Former Phoenix head coach Mike Heideman will receive a special recognition at halftime, led by Hall of Fame coach Dick Bennett. Heideman worked as the top assistant under Bennett and took over the head coaching job in 1995, leading the team to a 25-4 mark.
Â
POWERING THROUGH
Green Bay is one of only two teams in the NCAA to have played 10 conference games at this point of the season, joining Minnesota from the B10 who is also 3-7 in league play. After this weekend of HL action, GB will have 12 Horizon League games under its belt, while some other HL teams will only have 9 games. The upcoming schedule certainly opens up for the Phoenix though, who will only play one game next weekend, hit the road for two more following that, then play one game the following weekend. GB will wrap up the regular season in Detroit, the same location as the Horizon League Tournament.
 FRESHMEN CONTRIBUTIONS
Green Bay's win on Thursday came with the usual scoring from Khalil Small, but it was the efforts from freshmen Manny Patterson and Hunter Crist that proved clutch. Patterson notched his first career double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Crist put up 12 points off the bench in valuable minutes. GB won by 22, its largest margin of victory in a D1 game this season, despite getting only a combined 4 points from Sandy Cohen III and Kam Hankerson.
SMALL CLIMBING THE LADDER
Khalil Small notched his 1,000th career point on Jan. 4, becoming just the 28th player in program history to reach that milestone. He has scored in double-figures in 23 of 24 games this year, the most double-figure scoring games by any HL player this season. Below is where Small ranks all-time in career scoring at UWGB:
16.   Troy Cotton (2006-10) – 1251
17.   Matt Rohde (2001-05) – 1194
18.   Ryan Evanochko (2003-07) – 1184
19.   Joe Mauel (1978-82) – 1170
20.   Khalil Small (2014-18) - 1158
