HIGHLAND, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After being delayed a couple of hours due to frost on the Prestwick Village course, the Green Bay men's golf team shot a final round 297 to shoot up the team leaderboard before finishing fourth. With temperatures in the low 30s with the wind chill, playing conditions were less than ideal, but that didn't stop the Phoenix from shooting the second-best team score of the final round.
Most notably, GB finished ahead of tournament hosts Detroit Mercy and fellow Horizon League competitor Youngstown State. The team improved its score in each round, opening play with a 312 before a shooting a second round 301 and eventually a 297 final round.
Individually, George Kneiser recorded another Top 10 finish, shooting a final round 69 (-3) to finish T-8. Kneiser was one of only two players to shoot a 69 in the final round, despite the cold and blistery weather. The junior led all players in the tournament in par 4 scoring, finishing 1-under for the three rounds, the only player to finish under par on those holes.
Ben Gilles used back to back 74s to help him finish T-13 at 9-over par, while freshman Ryan Schuelke shot a final round 74 to finish T-20. Schuelke was dialed in on the par 3 holes, finishing -1 for the tournament and averaging just a 2.75 on those holes.
This tournament wraps up a successful fall season for the Phoenix, and the team will now turn its attention to its competitive spring season.
