Saturday match recap:
Green Bay 3, UIC 2
The Phoenix came from behind after falling in a tight first two sets. However, unbeknownst to Green Bay, the team was handed a regular season title after the third set, when miles away in Kentucky, the Northern Kentucky Norse defeated Cleveland State, which left the Phoenix as the sole victors no matter what the outcome of their match would be.
On her Senior Day,
Jessica Wolf set a career-high 19 kills out of the team's 65 total. While the Flames attempted 11 more attacks than the Phoenix, Green Bay was more accurate, hitting .176 compared to UIC's .131. Sophomore
Taylor Wolf matched her sister with 19 kills as well, while freshman
Alexandra Zakutney put down 15 kills. Sophomore
Ashley Sledge was a wall for the team, stopping 11 attacks with an impressive three solo blocks, while classmate
Anna Eaton joined her at the net with seven blocks total and a block solo of her own as well. Senior
Vanessa Buman out-dug the competition with 26 throughout the afternoon, while the younger Wolf and junior
Maddie Yoss helped out defensively as well, both putting up double-doubles.
Next Game
Top-seeded Green Bay will take on the lowest-remaining seed next Saturday, November 17 at 3 p.m. CT at the Kress Center.
Historic Season
This is the first-ever Horizon League regular season championship for Green Bay, and the 13 league wins are also a new program-record. Green Bay served as the host site for the 2002 Horizon League Tournament, back when the host site was on a rotational basis, and has never been the No.1 seed. The Phoenix has only won one HL Tournament, which happened back in 2003 when GB upset No.1 seed Milwaukee as the No. 3 seed in Indianapolis.
The winner of the Horizon League Tournament will receive an automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
