GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay Phoenix volleyball team (16-10, 11-3 HL) were back to their winning ways this afternoon, sweeping the Wright State Raiders (13-13, 5-9 HL) for the second time this season. This marks the sixth home event on the team's slate, with the Phoenix boasting wins in every match at the Kress Events Center.
Green Bay 3, Wright State 0
The Phoenix held the Raiders to just a .099 hitting percentage this afternoon, helped by Wright State's multiple errors; they had three players in the negative range.
Set one (25-23) started off slow for Green Bay, as they were unable to shake off Wright State. There were 13 ties yet only three lead changes in the first set alone, but the Phoenix were able to steal the last two points after being even at 23.
The second set (25-23) in particular was a big blocking game for the Phoenix, rejecting five in just this set, with many thanks to
Ashley Sledge. The sophomore collected eight blocks throughout the entire day, with one on her own, out of Green Bay's total of 10.
Set three (25-20) was the quickest of them all – Green Bay jumped out of the gates with a 5-2 lead and never looked back. In the last two games, and especially the clincher, the Phoenix seemed to look much more in control of the match.
Sophomore
Taylor Wolf put up 15 kills today, helped by Sledge and her nine additional kills with her .474 clip. At the net, Wolf, senior sister
Jessica Wolf, and junior
Maddie Yoss helped out with three blocks attributed to each player. Yoss also made 36 assists, an impressive 12 per set to solidify her position as the best setter in the league. In the back row, scooping up 16 digs to lead the team was senior
Vanessa Buman.
Next Game
The Phoenix will now enjoy the last weekend of the regular season at home, taking on Milwaukee at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9. On Saturday, November 10, Green Bay will face UIC at 4:00 p.m. after honoring their three seniors before the match.
