GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay men's soccer season came to a close on Monday night in the Horizon League tournament's quarterfinals, as the Phoenix fell to IUPUI in overtime, 3-2.
Â
"It was a classic example of college soccer tonight," head coach
Jeremy Bonomo said. "Anyone can win on any given night if you don't play hard for the entire game. Credit to IUPUI for the win. I'm exceptionally proud of this group, having finished top four in a very good conference. The sky is the limit with these guys. A special thank you to our three seniors, Brady, JT and Buran, for their contributions and helping put Green Bay soccer back on the map."
Â
It was the first playoff match at the newly constructed Aldo Santaga Stadium and there was no shortage of entertainment. Green Bay found itself trailing 2-0 in the early going, but a goal from
Michael Carreon in the 38
th minute cut the deficit to one goal just before the half.
Â
The second half offered numerous chances for the equalizer to the Phoenix, but it wasn't until the 81
st minute when sophomore
Adam Mansa scored the game-tying goal with time winding down. Regulation wrapped out without another score from either squad.
Â
In the 97
th minutes of action, Yan Souza found the back of the net for the golden goal and puched IUPUI's ticket to the Horizon League semifinals to face UIC.
Â
Green Bay bids farewell to seniors
Buran Huseini,
JT Spath and
Brady Lenius. First team honorees
Tomer Zloczower and
Andre Baires as well as all-freshman team member
Joey Bourgeois return to the Phoenix roster in 2019.
