SETTING THE STAGE
The Phoenix have played DePaul a total of 17 times, winning six of those games. The competition between these two teams dates back to 1983 when coach Carol Hammerle's squad suited up to play the Blue Demons for the first time. The majority of the other 16 games were played throughout the early 90's as both teams traded wins and losses. The most recent matchup happened nine years ago on December 2, 2009, when Green Bay upset No. 21 DePaul 79-68. This win was a landmark for the Phoenix because it marked their record-breaking 24th consecutive regular season victory which went on to total up to 45 consecutive regular season wins. At the time, Green Bay was the youngest team in school history to beat a ranked opponent. Once again, DePaul is ranked, this time at No. 15.
FABULOUS FRESHMAN
Freshman
Hailey Oskey enjoyed an 18-point outing in her first official action as a member of the Phoenix when the team welcomed Northwestern to the Kress Center for the season opener. She amassed 16 points before the end of the first half. Oskey finished 5-for-9 from the field and a nearly perfect 5-of-6 from long range in 27 minutes. Oskey led all scorers, giving Phoenix fans a glimpse at the scoring threat they will have the pleasure of watching the next four years.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Phoenix is looking forward to returning home after their road trip against two ranked opponents in no. 15 DePaul and No. 16 Missouri. It is expected that both teams will present a tough environment. Each game will have a playoff atmosphere after each side reached the big dance this past March. The Phoenix will return to their welcoming home at the Kress Center on Tuesday, November 20 when they play Maine.
READY FOR THE CHALLENGE
Green Bay will face five opponents this year who played in the NCAA Tournament last season. Two of these matchups will be at home, while the other three will be away. Two of those away games come early in the season when the Phoenix play No. 15 DePaul and No. 16 Missouri back to back for the second and third game of the year. Four of the five opponents exited in the first round, with the exception being Marquette who made it to the second round. Green Bay welcomes the challenge of a tough non-conference schedule in preparation of Horizon League play.
FAVORED TO WIN NUMBER 21
For the 11th-consecutive year, the Green Bay women's basketball team will enter the season as the Horizon League preseason favorite, as announced by the league office during its media day event in early October. Green Bay is fresh off its 20th-straight Horizon League Regular-Season Championship and is no stranger to high expectations, with Head coach
Kevin Borseth's Phoenix squad receiving 28 of the 29 first-place votes in the poll and accumulating 286 points to lead the nearest school by 41 (IUPUI).
DEFENSIVE MINDSET
Green Bay owned the nation's best statistical defense in the country a season ago, allowing a lowly 47.4 PPG. The Phoenix was the only program in the nation to hold opposing teams to lower than 50 points per game. With the reigning Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year returning to this year's roster, Green Bay will look for more of the same from its nationally recognized defense.
WHAT'S IN STORE FOR 2018-19
Borseth returns to the helm of the Green Bay women's basketball program for the 16th season in 2018-19, a year removed from leading the Phoenix to its 20th-consecutive regular season title and 18th NCAA Tournament appearance. The regular-season schedule features 14 home games, five nonconference matchups in addition to the nine league games. Green Bay opens the 2018-19 campaign by welcoming Northwestern to the Kress Center on Tuesday, Nov. 6, before hitting the road for matchups at DePaul (Nov. 9) and Missouri (Nov.16). The home nonconference schedule rounds out with pairings against Maine on Nov. 20, Dayton on Nov. 24 and a matchup with in-state rival Wisconsin on Dec. 8. The Phoenix will wrap up nonconference play at home against UW-Parkside on Dec. 18 before hitting the road to tipoff the 18-game league slate at Milwaukee on Dec. 28.
WINNING TRADITION
Green Bay secured its 41st-consecutive winning season last year and trails only Tennessee (44) for the longest active streak in the nation. Green Bay's streak includes 20-straight conference titles and 18 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Phoenix also secured its 19th-consecutive 20-plus win season dating back to 1999-00.
WINNING....SINCE THE BEGINNING
The Green Bay women's basketball team is one of three Division I women's basketball programs that has had a winning record every year since the NCAA took over administration of women's college athletics in the fall of 1981. Essentially, the Phoenix has never had a losing record in the NCAA era. There only two other programs to accomplish the same feat, Tennessee and Georgia.
HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS
Last season Green Bay made its ninth-consecutive Horizon League Tournament Championship game and 20th overall. The Phoenix owns a 16-4 all-time record in the tournament's biggest game and has won 16 of the last 21 titles.
20 STRAIGHT
The Phoenix clinched its 20th-consecutive regular season conference championship last season, a streak that dates back to the 1998-99 season. Green Bay's current consecutive title run is the longest active conference championship streak in the nation. To really put things in perspective, the last time that Green Bay lost a regular-season conference championship, five members of the team hadn't been born (
Karly Murphy,
Lyndsey Robson,
Anna Brecht, Patricia Gallasova and
Hailey Oskey).
