GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team came up just short in both of its matchup on the final day of the Hilltopper Classic hosted by Western Kentucky, falling 6-5 to tournament-host WKU and 5-4 in a rematch with Toledo.
Western Kentucky 6, Green Bay 5
Green Bay (1-9) plated was the first on the board in the opening game Sunday, plating two runs on a triple from
Crystal Guzman down the right-field line. The Phoenix increased its advantage to 3-0 in the fourth inning after
Sonia Schubert stole home.
Western Kentucky (10-4) responded in the bottom of the inning with five runs, taking command of the game at 5-3 with only three innings to play. WKU added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to push its lead to 6-3.
The Phoenix brought two more runs in on another hit from Guzman, this time a single that brought
Katie Rossmann and
Allie Hislope around to score and lower the deficit to one run, 6-5.
Green Bay kept the tournament hosts from touching the plate in the sixth but was unable to pull even in the seventh, falling 6-5.
Guzman finished 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs as the Phoenix outhit the Hilltoppers 8-6 in the morning matchup.

The Rockets scored in the top of the third for the first advantage of the day, but Green Bay responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs after
Jaclyn Delagrange sent a ball to right field that allowed
Bailey Schultz and
Olivia Magaldi to score, granting the Phoenix a 2-1 lead.
Toledo matched Green Bay's total in the fourth after Alex Paaveurud homered for the Rockets.
The Phoenix found its first extra-innings action of the season after the seventh came and went without any runs for either team. Toledo scored a trio of runs in the top of the eighth to lead 5-2.
Bailey Schultz got things going with a single down the left-field line which advanced Magaldi to third.
Chyanne Onstad kept things rolling with the next at-bat and singled through the left side to plate Magaldi.
Allie Hislope advanced Schultz and Onstad to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, placing the tying run in scoring position with one out.
Delagrange was able to knock Schultz in but Onstad was left stranded on the base pads as the Phoenix fell 5-4 in its weekend finale.
