Green Bay Closes Out Jayhawk Invitational with Win Over UMKC

LAWRENCE, Kan. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay softball split on its second day in the Jayhawk Invitational, dropping a tight contest to UNI, 1-0, before closing out the tournament with its second win of the season against UMKC, 6-3.

Kayla Schwebke was working in the circle for Green Bay in its first matchup on Saturday morning, with the freshman dealing for all seven innings and allowing zero earned runs.

The lone Panthers score came on a defensive miscue from the Phoenix in the third inning.

UNI finished with six hits compared to Green Bay's three. Allie Hislope, Bailey Schultz and Morgan Bihun all notched hits in the bout.

Green Bay struck first in the final game of the Jayhawk Invitational, as Allie Hislope laid down a bunt that led to a throwing error from the pitcher and allowed Aubrey Drohner to score.
 
A four-run third inning for the Phoenix pushed Green Bay's advantage to 5-0 early, with Morgan Bihun, Alexis Otto and Crystal Guzman all collecting RBIs in the frame.
 
UMKC finally managed to put runs on the board in the fifth, after a single from Hornosky led to a Phoenix throwing error and allowed two runs to touch home. Both teams added a run to their scores in the sixth before being held scoreless in the final inning of the invitational, with Green Bay holding out for the win, 6-3.
 
Elizabeth Pautz received the win after pitching a complete game, allowing two earned runs and striking out a career-high five batters.

Green Bay's matchup with Kansas on Sunday has been cancelled due to inclement weather. The Phoenix will return to the diamond in the Hoosier classic against Northern Illinois and Indiana on March 16.
