Volleyball to Head to South Dakota for Jackrabbits Invitational This Weekend

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay women's volleyball team will be heading to its second tournament of the season this weekend, making the trip to Billings, South Dakota for the Comfort Suites Jackrabbits Invitational, hosted by South Dakota State. The Phoenix will be playing two matches on Friday, August 31 and one on Saturday, September 1.

"We learned a lot throughout the weekend at TCU," said head coach Abbey Sutherland, reflecting on the previous tournament's results. "The competition was tough; the opposing teams definitely exposed what we need to improve upon. Our goal is to continue to get better and embrace the process throughout non-conference play. We are excited to get mentally and physically stronger, and we will always have a culture-based focus. The weekend at South Dakota is another opportunity to compete and show that we have guts."

The Phoenix will take on Weber State on 12:00 p.m. Friday, then have a short break before facing Seattle at 4:30 p.m. The next day, Green Bay will conclude the tournament with a match against hosts South Dakota State at 2:00 p.m.

Opponent Outlook
Green Bay hasn't seen Weber State since 1990, where the Phoenix won due to a forfeit. This year, the Wildcats have a 1-2 record after besting Toledo and then losing to both the University of Notre Dame as well as Horizon League members Northern Kentucky at the Notre Dame Tournament. Last year, they finished with a 9-20 overall record and a 7-9 conference record. Weber State qualified for their conference tournament, but fell in the first round to North Dakota 1-3.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix will be going face-to-face with Seattle University for the first time. The Redhawks currently have a record of 1-2. Last year, Seattle held an 11-17 overall record and a 7-7 conference record. In 2017, they faced Horizon League members Northern Kentucky and UIC, taking the loss in both matches. In comparison, Green Bay took down Northern Kentucky twice in conference play and defeated UIC in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament, 3-2.

South Dakota State, on the other hand, is a familiar face for the women's team. The Phoenix hold a 3-2 all-time match advantage over the Jackrabbits, last playing them in 2016, where Green Bay took them down in 3-0 at home. Currently, SDSU owns a 0-3 record after attending the UMKC Invitational last weekend.

Last Weekend Recap
The Phoenix came away with a 1-3 record following last weekend's TCU Cowtown Classic tournament. While they bested SIUE 3-1, they fell to TCU, UAB, and North Dakota in straight sets. Senior Vanessa Buman was named to the All-Tournament team thanks to her consistent defensive skills throughout each match.
