MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- This evening, Green Bay women's volleyball team (5-7) finished its last tournament before Horizon League play, with Kansas State (10-1) only allowing the Phoenix one set in the four-set match.
Kansas State 3, Green Bay 1
This match was a roller coaster, with a Phoenix comeback occurring in the third set (21-25, 15-25, 25-23, 12-25). In the first set, the Wildcats blocked multiple attacks from Green Bay, putting up five total blocks to keep ahead the entire game. In the second, the Phoenix got into defensive mode, performing four blocks compared to Kansas State's two, but their offensive game was off as they were unable to execute their kills.
The third set looked like an entirely different team, with Green Bay taking command early. They were able to hang on to their lead, capitalizing on their opportunities to attack more frequently than the Wildcats. However, the fourth set was similar to the second, with Kansas State stopping nearly every attempt the Phoenix took.
Freshman
Alexandra Zakutney hit .300 this evening as the most efficient offensive player for Green Bay. Defensively, senior
Vanessa Buman stopped 23 attacks with 5.75 digs per set. Sophomore
Taylor Wolf recorded a double-double in four sets with 15 kills to lead the team and 17 digs.
Next Game
Green Bay will begin Horizon League play on the road, competing in four matches before returning to the Kress Center. The first pair of games will take place at Northern Kentucky and IUPUI, with the Phoenix taking on the Norse next Friday, September 21 at 5:00 p.m., then turning around to play the Jaguars at 3:00 p.m. the next day.
