MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay volleyball team (7-8, 2-1 HL) took down in-state rivals Milwaukee (2-15, 1-3 HL) in four sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-27, 25-14) this afternoon, picking up their first win of the weekend and their second Horizon League match in a row.
Green Bay 3, Milwaukee 1
The Phoenix held the Panthers to a low .107 hitting percentage throughout the entire match, taking nine less attack attempts than their opponents but connecting on nine more kills to give Green Bay the offensive benefit.
Green Bay was only tripped up in the third set, letting the Panthers take a seven-point lead, but this game also provided the most exciting scoring run of the game, fighting from being down 16-23 to tying the game at 23-23. In the end, Milwaukee had enough willpower to end the set at 27-25.
On the other hand, the major factor that contributed to the win was the large difference between total blocks: the Phoenix players were a wall with a season-high 16, and the Panthers players could only stop Green Bay at the net five times. Sophomore
Anna Eaton tallied a season-high nine blocks, averaging an impressive 2.25 blocks per set to lead the Phoenix, but she was helped by sophomores
Ashley Sledge and
Taylor Wolf as they each had six to their name.
Other reliable players included senior
Vanessa Buman, totaling 6.75 digs per set to lead both teams, and junior
Maddie Yoss, who had quite the match, recording a double-double with 44 assists and 12 digs, but also executing 7 kills as well. Freshman
Alexandra Zakutney also had a strong showing, performing 13 kills with a .323 hitting percentage and five blocks.
Next Game
The Phoenix will continue their weekend of play tomorrow, facing UIC (9-7, 2-1 HL) in Chicago at 2:00 p.m. The Flames faced Milwaukee yesterday, sweeping the Panthers in three sets.
