Green Bay Sweeps Saint Louis to Conclude Sycamore Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay volleyball team (5-5) took down the Saint Louis Billikens (1-7) in straight sets to conclude the Sycamore Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana. Their final record at the tournament was 2-1, with sophomore Taylor Wolf and junior Maddie Yoss named to the All-Tournament Team.

"After a tough loss last night, I'm so proud of how our team responded today," said head coach Abbey Sutherland. "Our women treated last night as a learning opportunity and focused on what we needed to improve upon as a team. We woke up today ready to fight again, and that's the mentality that we need all season long. We will continue to treat struggles as learning opportunities. Our mental approach, in addition to awareness of situational volleyball, will be key components to our team unity."

There were two components to Green Bay's performance that led to a clean sweep (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) of the Billikens: defensive prowess and keeping each play crisp and clean.

The Phoenix put up eleven total blocks throughout the three-set match, a huge improvement from the three recorded in the five sets last night against the host team. Sophomore Anna Eaton led these efforts, coming away with seven total blocks, one of those being the only block solo of the entire game.

The other factor was simply avoiding errors. Saint Louis gave up 25 points in attack errors, compared to Green Bay's eight, and doubled the Phoenix in service errors. While SLU ended up performing more kills, their messiness, especially early on in the match, gave Green Bay a solid victory.

Other leaders include Wolf, executing 15 kills, with freshman Alexandra Zakutney not far behind with 11. This duo paired well with Yoss, supporting the offense with 28 assists. Defensively, senior Vanessa Buman had 11 digs, while sophomore Ashley Sledge collected four block assists.

Next Game
Next week, the Phoenix will compete in their last tournament of the regular season before entering Horizon League play. Green Bay will attend the Gopher Fall Classic, taking on #1 ranked Minnesota on Thursday, September 13, and take on Kansas State the following day.
