GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay men's soccer team celebrated the second-annual Soctoberfest and 50 years of Phoenix athletics on Saturday night at Aldo Santaga Stadium, capped by a 1-0 victory over Cleveland State.
The Phoenix secured three points and a crucial win in its league slate, provided by a game-winning goal from
Villi Kaldal which was assisted from
Andre Baires in the 73
rd minute.
The two squads were deadlocked for the majority of the match, but it was evident GB turned up its attack early in the second half as the Phoenix notched seven of its nine shots in the final 45.
The winning strike and first goal of Kaldal's Phoenix career came after Baires served a beautiful ball through the backline which was collected on the right side of the net and sent past the Vikings' keeper.
Jamison Yoder collected his first clean sheet of the season in the victory and secured five saves while protecting the net for Green Bay.
Michael Carreon, Ezau Milan and
Karim Lauba joined Kaldal with attempts on the opposition's net.
A halftime ceremony also recognized the 1969 Green Bay men's soccer team, which was the first athletics program in the University's history.Â
Green Bay travels south on Tuesday to face Marquette but returns home and continues league play with Milwaukee on Saturday, Oct. 12 with the Chancellor's Cup on the line.
