DAYTON, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay Phoenix volleyball team (21-9, 12-4) fell in the Horizon League Tournament semifinals to No. 2 seeded Milwaukee this evening (25-23, 19-25, 20-25, 29-31).
Green Bay 1, Milwaukee 3
A trio of juniors led the way offensively for the Phoenix.Â
Taylor Wolf tallied 25 kills on a .305 hitting percentage, followed by
Ashley Sledge with 14 kills on a .481 hitting percentage.Â
Kristen Paulus rounded out the trio by adding 10 kills in the match. Senior setter
Maddie Yoss logged 51 assists, an ace and a kill on the night.
Defensively, Green Bay recorded 14 total-blocks and 24 block-assists for the match. Of the 63 total-digs,
Taylor Wolf led with 17, followed by freshman libero
Annelise Sparks with 15 and
Maddie Yoss with 12.
Set one (25-23) went back-and-forth between the two teams to begin the match. With a score at 5-5, the Phoenix went on a 6-0 run to separate from the Panthers. Milwaukee grabbed the next point, but back-to-back kills from
Kristen Paulus forced the Panthers to take their second timeout of the set with the score at 13-6. Nonetheless, the squad scored the next four points to grow their lead to 17-6. The Panthers grabbed a little momentum after a 5-0 run, but
Taylor Wolf ended the scoring drought to put the set at 18-11. The two sides traded points, but Coach Sutherland took a timeout after Milwaukee went on another small run to put the score at 20-15. Despite the Panthers best efforts,
Taylor Wolf took the kill on set point for the Phoenix.
In set two (19-25), neither team could grab the momentum early. Each side's lead never grew to more than two. With the score at 8-8, the squad went on a 4-1 run to forced Milwaukee to take their first timeout. At the midway point, Green Bay led 13-11. The Panthers then went on a 3-0 run of their own which caused Coach Sutherland to take her first timeout of the set. Milwaukee's lead grew, but a kill from
Taylor Wolf and ace from
Maddie Yoss cut the deficit to 17-19. The Phoenix kept things interesting, but ultimately the Panthers tied the match at 1-1.
Set three (20-25) was another tight set between the two teams. Neither side could truly separate from one-another, but Green Bay trailed at the midway point 12-13. The Phoenix took the lead late at 18-17, which forced the Panthers to take a timeout. Unfortunately for Green Bay, Milwaukee went on a 4-0 lead to retake the lead and seized control of the momentum. The Phoenix couldn't overcome that, and the Panthers took the 2-1 lead in the match.
Set four (29-31) saw Milwaukee claim the set and the match. Both teams were at a deadlock throughout and couldn't build any momentum either way. With the set at 29-29, an attack error by the Phoenix and a kill from the Panthers propelled Milwaukee over Green Bay.
