Shorthanded Phoenix Falls on Buzzer Beater at Maine, 61-60

BANGOR, ME (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay clashed with Maine on Friday night at the Cross Insurance Center and battled the Black Bears to the very last shot. Redshirt Senior Frankie Wurtz hit two free throws with 5.5 seconds left to put Green Bay on top 60-59, but the Black Bears raced up the court on the final possession and dished to an open Maeve Carroll who was able to connect on a jumper and steal a 61-60 victory for the hosts.

After a slow start, the Phoenix used a 9-0 run to open the second quarter and began taking control of the game. Green Bay outscored Maine by an 18-3 margin in the frame, eventually working to a 28-24 advantage at halftime.

Green Bay was limited in the matchup, as Mackenzie Wolf and Anna Dier had to make early exits due to injury. Despite the roster limitations, the Phoenix continued to exchange baskets with the Black Bears, who went 15-1 in conference play last season and advanced to the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

Dor Saar was the leading scorer on the evening and poured in 30 points for the Black Bears, nine best than her career high entering the matchup and buried eight three-pointer on 10 attempts. Karly Murphy led the Phoenix with 15 points, followed by double-digit scoring contributions from Lyndsey Robson (14) and Frankie Wurtz (12).

The victory for Maine snapped a three-game winning streak over the team from out east for Green Bay and shifted the all-time series to 4-2, still in favor of the Phoenix.

Green Bay will now shift its focus to Marist College, as the Phoenix prepares to take the floor at McCann Arena on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT. The Phoenix ranked 15th in the mid-major poll entering the weekend while the Red Foxes ranked 13th.
