LAST TIME OUT
- Thanks to a total team effort with a 61 percent shooting night and a career-high 28 points from freshman Amari Davis, Green Bay burned past Montana State on the road on Saturday night at Worthington Arena in Bozeman, winning 98-72 to open its four-game road swing. Five players scored in double-figures, helping the Phoenix (3-4) to enjoy its largest road win since it beat Chicago State in January 2016 by 33 points.Â
LAST GAME'S STARTERS
SERIES HISTORY
- Xavier leads the series 1-0. XU won the only meeting in the series 76-55 in the 1994-95 season (2-11-95) in Cincinnati.Â
ABOUT XAVIER (Big East Conference)
FRESHMAN PHENOM
- Amari Davis officially arrived on the Horizon League scene this past week for Green Bay, earning his first career start and averaging 20.7 PPG in his team's three games. He earned Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season, the only player in program history with multiple freshman of the week accolades. Davis opened the week with 15 points against CSUN and followed that up with 19 versus Colgate, earning himself a spot on the Roman Legends Classic Subregional All-Tournament Team. The left-handed guard then earned the start at Montana State on Saturday, pouring in a career-high 28 points in his team's 98-72 win on the road, where he also led the team with seven rebounds. Davis' efforts helped GB go 2-1 on the week, and he now leads the team in scoring through seven games with 16.3 PPG, having scored in double-figures in all seven games this year. He also shot a scorching 60 percent from the field in the three games.
SHOOTING THE JAYQUAN
- Green Bay went 2-1 on the week and JayQuan McCloud was a big reason why, averaging 17.3 PPG including 20 and 18 in his team's two wins. McCloud was named to the Roman Legends Classic Subregional All-Tournament Team for his efforts, and also led his team with 13 assists in the three games. He hit four 3s in all three games, and led the team with 33.5 MPG in all three starts. He is second on the team in scoring with 14.7 PPG and leads the team with 18 made 3-pointers.
FOUR SCORE
- Through seven games this season, Green Bay has a balanced attack with four players averaging 10 or more points (with Hankerson at 9.7 PPG, just outside). Amari Davis, JayQuan McCloud, PJ Pipes and Cody Schwartz are all into double figures for the Phoenix. Additionally, four of those five players are shooting over 50 percent, led by Davis' 61.5 percent from the field.
PAST AND PERCENTAGE
- Green Bay is shooting 47.9 percent from the field this season, the highest percentage of any team in the Linc Darner era and the highest percentage since the historic 1993-94 season. That was the season when Green Bay was a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament and upset a Jason Kidd-led California team in the first round. GB has shot over 50 percent in three games this season, including a 61.5 clip at Montana State in Saturday's blowout win, the highest percentage in a game under Darner as well.Â
SCHWARTZ STORY
- Senior Cody Schwartz is enjoying the best season of his career, averaging a career-best 10.0 PPG while leading the team in rebounding with 4.6 RPG. Schwartz averages 6.7 PPG for his career, and is a 36.8 percent shooter from long range. This year has been a different story, with Schwartz in double-figure average and shooting 48.0 percent (12-25) from beyond the arc. He has started the last three games, averaging about 30 MPG and has hit multiple 3s in each of those games. GB has gone 2-1 with No. 33 in the starting lineup.
SCORING IN RECORDS
- Thanks to the 115-point outburst against UW-Stout in its home-opener, GB now has six of the top 15 highest scoring games in program history under head coach Linc Darner. The 115 points are tied for the most in the Division 1 era, the same total scored by Darner's Phoenix against Detroit Mercy in January 2016.
CONNECTING WITH KENPOM
- After three games in the books, Green Bay has played at the 9th-fastest pace among all NCAA Division I teams, averaging 76.6 possessions per 40 minutes. In the four seasons under Linc Darner, here is where Green Bay has ranked in adjusted tempo:
- 2018-19: 13th
- 2017-18: 23rd
- 2016-17: 7th
- 2015-16: 6th
PIPES IT UP
- Junior PJ Pipes is in the midst of the best individual season of his career, averaging 11.9 PPG while shooting 52.7 percent from the field. Pipes averages 7.0 for his career, and is almost 5 points ahead of that career average for this season. He has started in 6 of his team's 7 games and is second on the team with 15 made 3-pointers. Pipes is also second on the team in minutes played and second in assists with 21 this season.                   Â
GBonTV
- The Phoenix is scheduled to play five games on national TV this season, with a pair of games on BTN and ESPNU. GB will also play on FS2 against Xavier. Additionally, GB will play all of its home games on either ESPN3Â or ESPN+, with the Legends Classic being aired on FloSports.
HORIZON HAPPY
- With its 10 wins last season, GB has now won 10 or more games in League play in seven of the last eight seasons, and the third time in four seasons under Darner. The team has finished fourth or higher in the HL in six out of the last seven seasons as well, earning a postseason appearance in each of those six seasons. The HL preseason poll has GB tabbed fifth, behind Wright State, NKU, UIC and Oakland.
SENIOR SZN
- The Phoenix boasts a strong veteran lineup in 2019-20, led by five seniors and a bevy of juniors. Seniors ShanQuan Hemphill, JayQuan McCloud, Josh McNair, Kameron Hankerson and Cody Schwartz have all played signficant minutes during their Green Bay careers, four of which started the bulk of games last season. The junior class, one of Darners first full recruiting classes, is led by PJ Pipes, Trevian Bell, Manny Patterson and Hunter Crist. Each of those players have also played significant minutes over the last two seasons, and will be leaned up again this season. Despite the departure of Sandy Cohen, GB will deploy a strong veteran side this season.
McCLOUD NINE
- JayQuan McCloud earned All-Horizon League Second Team recognition, serving as the team's returning leading scorer from a season ago. The Chicago native averaged 14.1 PPG in league play last season, playing in all 18 games and finishing with a team-high 35 made 3-pointers. Overall on the season, McCloud averaged 13.7 PPG and made 77 3-pointers, while ranking third on the team in minutes per game. He was also named to the CIT All-Tournament Team and was instrumental to the team's deep run in that postseason tournament.Â
