LOCKING DOWN THE LEAGUE
Green Bay boasts the Horizon League's best defense statistically, allowing only 51.6 PPG to opponents in the 12 conference contests. The Phoenix has held its opponents to fewer than 50 points in six league matchups, including two where GB allowed less than 40 points. Most recently, Green Bay locked down league-leading Wright State and surrendered only 37 points to the Raiders. The Phoenix currently ranks sixth in the nation in scoring defense with an average of 52.8 PPG.
STEALING THE SHOW
Green Bay has been notorious for forcing turnovers all season long, due in large part to the reigning defensive player of the year,
Jen Wellnitz. Wellnitz
has been a catalyst for the Phoenix defense all season long and averages of 3.05 turnovers per game to rank 16th in the NCAA.
BOUNCING BACK
Three games have passed since Green Bay suffered its most recent loss, 67-63, to IUPUI. The Phoenix has allowed an average of only 41.3 PPG to its opposition and owns a margin of victory of 20.3 points per game, a stretch that includes a matchup with league-leading Wright State.
RIVALRY ROUNDUP
Green Bay welcomed Milwaukee Feb. 2for the final in-state rivalry pairing of the regular season, sweeping the Panthers in the process. The Phoenix owns an all-time record of 70-19 against the team down south, and currently boasts a five-game winning streak in the series. GB has claimed victories in 13 of the past 14 meetings. The Phoenix has enjoyed success against the three division I teams hailing from Wisconsin, currently owning an all-time record of 120-48 following last Saturday's matchup.
WELLNITZ WOWING
Jen Wellnitz put on a clinic on against UIC earlier this season, securing a career-high nine steals in only 23 minutes to rank third on the program's single-game steals list. The single-game record is 12, held by WNBA draft pick Julie Wojta. Wellnitz currently ranks seventh on GB's all-time steals list with 260.
STARTING A NEW STREAK
A loss to IUPUI two weeks ago snapped a 27-game winning streak at home in conference play, but the Phoenix bounced back with a win over Milwaukee, followed by big wins over Northern Kentucky and league-leading Wright State. GB owns a record of 40-3 at home during league play over the past five seasons and has not lost back-to-back league games at the Kress Center during that stretch.
APPROACHING 1,000 PROGRAM WINS
During its 46 years as a program, the Green Bay women's basketball team has accumulated a total of 998 victories. During those 46 seasons, three head coaches have graced the sidelines for the Phoenix, starting with Carol Hammerle in the 1973-74 campaign. Hammerle led the program for 25 seasons and accumulated 456 wins before passing the torch to
Kevin Borseth in 1998-99, who would go on to lead the Phoenix for 16 total seasons in two separate stints leading up to our present campaign. Borseth has racked up 394 wins with the Phoenix and continues to add to that number with each passing game. Matt Bollant took the reins from 2007-12, amassing 148 victories in five seasons and leading the program to an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen.
SECURING 700
Kevin Borseth sealed his 700th career head coaching victory against Youngstown State on Jan. 12. Borseth currently ranks 16th among active coaches in wins throughout all divisions of the NCAA, and he is the 29th coach in history to reach the 700-win milestone. Among active division I coaches with at least five years of division I coaching experience, Borseth's 705 wins ranks 10th in the nation.
NONCONFERENCE NOTABLES
The Phoenix faced two Big Ten teams, three ranked opponents and six NCAA Tournament Qualifiers in its 10-game nonconference season, compiling a 5-5 record in the process. Green Bay earned national attention by taking No. 15 DePaul to the wire and defeating No. 16 Missouri. Missouri is the highest ranked road opponent ever defeated by Green Bay and the highest ranked team to fall at the hands of the Phoenix since No. 12 Michigan State in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, a win which propelled GB into the Sweet Sixteen. The Phoenix is 3-3 against teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament.
DOUBLE-DIGIT PRODUCTION
Green Bay has received double-digit scoring numbers from at least three players in 11 of the 12 games this league season, including one contest where four members of the squad reached the mark. Eight different members of the team have reached double digits in scoring through the nine league contests, leading the Phoenix to a 7-2 record.
BATTLE ON THE BOARDS
The Phoenix has outrebounded its opponents 707-676 over the course of 20 games this season. Redshirt Junior
Madison Wolf leads Green Bay in rebounding and averages 7.2 rebounds per game, which ranks her seventh in the Horizon League. Wolf has reached double digits in rebounds five times this season, including a career-high performance against Wisconsin with 12.
FAVORED TO WIN NUMBER 21
For the 11th-consecutive year, the Green Bay women's basketball team will enter the season as the Horizon League preseason favorite, as announced by the league office during its media day event in early October. Green Bay is fresh off its 20th-straight Horizon League Regular-Season Championship and is no stranger to high expectations, with Head coach
Kevin Borseth's Phoenix squad receiving 28 of the 29 first-place votes in the poll and accumulating 286 points to lead the nearest school by 41 (IUPUI).
WINNING....SINCE THE BEGINNING
The Green Bay women's basketball team is one of three Division I women's basketball programs that has had a winning record every year since the NCAA took over administration of women's college athletics in the fall of 1981. Essentially, the Phoenix has never had a losing record in the NCAA era. There only two other programs to accomplish the same feat, Tennessee and Georgia.
HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS
Last season Green Bay made its ninth-consecutive Horizon League Tournament Championship game and 20th overall. The Phoenix owns a 16-4 all-time record in the tournament's biggest game and has won 16 of the last 21 titles.
20 STRAIGHT
The Phoenix clinched its 20th-consecutive regular season conference championship last season, a streak that dates back to the 1998-99 season. Green Bay's current consecutive title run is the longest active conference championship streak in the nation. To really put things in perspective, the last time that Green Bay lost a regular-season conference championship, five members of the team hadn't been born (
Karly Murphy,
Lyndsey Robson,
Anna Brecht, Patricia Gallasova and
Hailey Oskey).
