LEAGUE OUTLOOK
Green Bay enters Thursday at 13-3 in Horizon League play, ranking second behind Wright State (14-2). The Phoenix suffered an overtime loss at home earlier in the season to IUPUI. The top-four seeds of the Horizon League tournament have already been determined, with Green Bay, Wright State, Youngstown State and IUPUI all securing spots.
Â
SECURING 1,000 PROGRAM WINS
During its 46 years in existence, the Green Bay women's basketball team has accumulated a total of 1000 victories, becoming the
10th division I program in history to reach the milestone. During those 46 seasons, three head coaches have graced the sidelines for the Phoenix, starting with Carol
Hammerle in the 1973-74 campaign.
Hammerle led the program for 25 seasons and accumulated 456 wins before passing the torch to Kevin
Borseth in 1998-99, who would go on to lead the Phoenix for 16 total seasons in two separate stints leading up to our present campaign.
Borseth has racked up 397 wins with the Phoenix and continues to add to that number with each passing game. Matt
Bollant took the reins from 2007-12, amassing 148 victories in five seasons and leading the program to an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen.
Â
MAGNIFICENT MOHNS
Carly
Mohns has been a dominant force for Green Bay as of late, including a trip to Ohio where the senior led all scorers in both games on the weekend and bested her career high heading into the weekend in both matchups.
Mohns first opened with a 24-point outburst at Youngstown State, where the senior buried seven triples and set a new
Beeghly Center record for most three-pointers made in a game by a visiting player.
Mohns stayed hot in GB's weekend finale with Cleveland State, adding 18 points to the Phoenix total on an 8-of-11 clip from the field.
Mohns finished the weekend 15-of-22 from the field and 8-of-12 from long range paired with 13 rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Most recently,
Mohns reached double figures against Oakland and celebrated Senior Day with a win over Detroit Mercy.
Â
HOSTING HORIZON LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Green Bay has been locked in as a host school for the Horizon League Tournament's quarterfinals, securing a top-four seed for the postseason. GB's seed for the tournament and its opponent has yet to be determined, but the quarterfinal game will be played on Wednesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. Season ticket holders who wish to secure their seats for the quarterfinals matchup will have until Friday, Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m. to do so, as sale to the general public will begin on Monday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m.
Â
LOCKING DOWN THE LEAGUE
Green Bay boasts the Horizon League's best defense statistically, allowing only 51.3 PPG to opponents in the 16 conference contests. The Phoenix has held its opponents to fewer than 50 points in eight league matchups, including four where GB allowed less than 40 points. Most recently, Green Bay locked down Oakland and Detroit Mercy, surrendering less than 40 points in both games. The Phoenix currently ranks fifth in the nation in scoring defense with an average of 52.5 PPG.
Â
STEALING THE SHOW
Green Bay averages 9.2 steals per game which ranks 2nd in the Horizon League. The Phoenix recorded a single-game conference high 20 steals against UIC (01/24/19). Jen
Wellnitz leads not only the team but also the conference in steals with 69, which ties for
29th in the NCAA. She ranks seventh on GB's all-time steals list with 262.
Â
WELLNITZ WOWING
Not only does Jen
Wellnitz steal the ball on defense, but she also knows how to dish it out to her teammates on offense. She averages 3.6 assists per game which leads the team and is tied for 5th in the Horizon League.
Wellnitz has passed for 379 career assists which currently ranks for 6th on GB's all-time assists list.
Â
STARTING A NEW STREAK
A loss to IUPUI two weeks ago snapped a 27-game winning streak at home in conference play, but the Phoenix bounced back with a win over Milwaukee, followed by big wins over Northern Kentucky and league-leading Wright State. GB owns a record of 42-3 at home during league play over the past five seasons and has not lost back-to-back league games at the
Kress Center during that stretch.
Â
SECURING 700
Kevin
Borseth sealed his
700th career head coaching victory against Youngstown State on Jan. 12.
Borseth currently ranks
16th among active coaches in wins throughout all divisions of the NCAA, and he is the
29th coach in history to reach the 700-win milestone. Among active division I coaches with at least five years of division I coaching experience,
Borseth's 709 wins ranks
10th in the nation.
Â
NONCONFERENCE NOTABLES
The Phoenix faced two Big Ten teams, three ranked opponents and six NCAA Tournament Qualifiers in its 10-game nonconference season, compiling a 5-5 record in the process. Green Bay earned national attention by taking No. 15 DePaul to the wire and defeating No. 16 Missouri. Missouri is the highest ranked road opponent ever defeated by Green Bay and the highest ranked team to fall at the hands of the Phoenix since No. 12 Michigan State in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, a win which propelled GB into the Sweet Sixteen. The Phoenix is 3-3 against teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament.
Â
HOME SWEET HOME
Green Bay owns a 41-3 record in Horizon League play when taking the court at home since the 2014-15 season. This is due largely in part to the Phoenix fans that support their team. A Phoenix home game at the
Kress Center draws an average of 2,004 fans which leads the Horizon League in home attendance.
Â
WINNING....SINCE THE BEGINNING
The Green Bay women's basketball team is one of three Division I women's basketball programs that has had a winning record every year since the NCAA took over administration of women's college athletics in the fall of 1981. Essentially, the Phoenix has never had a losing record in the NCAA era. There only two other programs to accomplish the same feat, Tennessee and Georgia.
Â
HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS
Last season Green Bay made its ninth-consecutive Horizon League Tournament Championship game and
20th overall. The Phoenix owns a 16-4 all-time record in the tournament's biggest game and has won 16 of the last 21 titles.
