DETROIT (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- For just the second time in the last nine Horizon League seasons, a team other than Green Bay has claimed the tournament championship, following Wright State's 55-52 victory in the 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Championship game. The Phoenix (22-9) was pursuing its fifth-straight tournament championship, but instead it will be the regular season champion Raiders (27-6) to earn the NCAA Tournament's automatic berth.
Green Bay fought back to tie the game at 49-49 with 90 seconds left, but Wright State hit a jumper to go up two with just over a minute left. Emily Vogelpohl's shot hit the back of the iron, stuck and fell through. After a few made free throws and a 3-pointer by
Laken James to make the score 53-52, WSU went up two before
Carly Mohns missed a contested 3 with 14 seconds left that would have gave GB the lead.
The Raiders held on from there to give GB its first-ever loss at Motor City Madness.
Mackenzie Wolf, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led GB with 10 points as the only player in double-figures. GB shot just 37 percent from the field and made only six of its 19 3-point attempts.
The Phoenix will now await its postseason fate, with the NCAA Tournament being a long shot. GB has already secured a spot to play in the WNIT, which will be announced next week following Selection Monday. Stay tuned to greenbayphoenix.com and follow GB on social media for updates.
