Green Bay Softball Splits First Day of Horizon League Play with Wright State

DE PERE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay softball team split the first day of its Horizon League season with Wright State, taking game one after a strong performance in the circle from Kayla Schwebke, 5-1.

The Phoenix rallied back from being down 11-3 as late as the fifth inning in game two but was never able to pull even with the Raiders and dropped the second game of the day, 11-8.

The final game of the series has been moved to St. Norbert, with the first pitch slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Mel Nicks Sports Complex.

Green Bay 5, Wright State 1
Morgan Bihun put the Phoenix on the board first in the opening frame of the day with a two-RBI single to center field, scoring Rebecca Radtke and Kalyssa Koehn.

Wright State added one run in the third inning, but GB negated the score in the bottom of the frame after Aubrey Drohner sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Isabella Curtin and grant Green Bay a 3-1 lead.

Bihun provided her second two-RBI hit of the day in the fourth inning, this time off a double to left field which scored Radtke and Emily Madeiros to bring Green Bay's advantage to 5-1.

The Raiders were scoreless the remainder of the game as GB went on to win 5-1 in its league opener.

Schwebke (5-3) picked up the win for the Phoenix after 7.0 innings of work, where the sophomore allowed seven hits and only one run while picking up four strikeouts.

Wright State 11, Green Bay 8
Wright State was the first to touch home in game two, as a home run in the first inning granted the Raiders and early edge over the Phoenix.

Nine runs were scored by Wright State in the third, fourth and fifth frames combined as the Raiders owned an 11-3 advantage as teams headed to the bottom of the fifth.

Green Bay attempted to rally and scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, courtesy a two-RBI Bihun single to right-center and an Alyssa Brewer hit which brought Koehn home.

The Phoenix was never able to completely erase the deficit in its second pairing, eventually falling 11-8 in game two.

The final game of the series has been moved to St. Norbert, with the first pitch slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mel Nicks Sports Complex.
