GREEN BAY (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team was looking for a win in its final two games of the season this Saturday afternoon at Circle Tap, but the Youngstown State Penguins solidified the series sweep with a 8-0 win before coming from behind to earn the 6-5 victory as well.
Youngstown State 8, Green Bay 0
Like the day before, the score was even at zero for most of the game until the Penguins racked up eight points in the fifth inning, including a grand slam. GB had just one inning to counter, and answered by putting basemen on third and second thanks to a double by
Emily Madeiros on her senior day. Ultimately, however, the Phoenix were shut out due to the mercy rule.
Youngstown State 6, Green Bay 5
Green Bay turned things around for the final game of the afternoon quickly, scoring early in the first with a double from
Aubrey Drohner. YSU responded in the second by bringing in a run after some miscommunication in the Phoenix infield.
GB collected two more runs in the third inning:
Morgan Bihun brought
Rebecca Radtke in from second with a sharp single to left center. Bihun eventually made it all the way around the bases as
Brittany Baneck earned an RBI from a right field single.
In the bottom of the fifth, it looked like the Phoenix were on their way to clinching the game. In the fourth, Schultz gained an RBI from a triple and was later brought in from a Bihun fly into the outfield. The Penguins had brought in two runs from a homer in the fifth but was still down 5-3.
An unearned run brought Youngstown State closer to Green Bay at the top of the sixth, and the Phoenix was unable to create a larger cushion in the bottom of the inning after three straight outs. The Penguins made their comeback official in the seventh with two more runs thanks to strong hits into the outfield, and GB ended their seasonwith a loss.
