GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay battled on the road at St. Mary's on Thursday evening and took the Gaels (1-2) down to the wire, but a late goal from SMC's Sophie Santos spoiled Green Bay's (2-1) chances of a decision.
Santos broke through the strong Phoenix backline after a cross from teammate Jaylen Crim and snuck a shot past the sure hands of Phoenix keeper
Courtney Klatt.
Claudia Janese and Klatt split work protecting the net in the pairing, as the duo combined for a total of five saves.
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for GB and also ends its streak of consecutive shutouts. It was only the second time in program history where the two teams faced off, with SMC claiming the first meeting as well, 3-0, in Green Bay.
St. Mary's owned a 17-8 advantage in total shots, along with a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. Green Bay's lone shot on goal came from the foot of
Dorene Sanchez, who nearly gave the Phoenix an edge in the 57
th minute.
Green Bay will continue its trip in the Golden State, taking the pitch on Sunday at UC Davis with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. (CT).
