GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay volleyball team won their fourth straight match this afternoon, defeating Indiana State 3-2 (20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9) to claim the GBD Invite Title.
Green Bay 3, Indiana State 2
The Sycamores took the Phoenix to their first five set match of the season, but Green Bay put on a strong performance in the fifth set to take the victory. Senior setter
Maddie Yoss led the way for the Phoenix, contributing 56 assist, 11 digs, along with a kill and ace. Yoss was impressive to say the least, and now has 4,012 assist for her career. She is only one of two players in program history to reach 4K. Junior
Taylor Wolf logged 24 kills to lead the Phoenix offensively, while sophomore outside hitter
Shannon Coughlin added a career-high 14 kills also. Additionally, juniors
Kristen Paulus and
Ashley Sledge recorded double-digit kills for Green Bay. The Phoenix had 7 aces during the match as well, with Junior
Anna Eaton having a season-high 4 herself.
Â
Set one (20-25) went the way of Indiana State. The Sycamores were more efficient from an offensive standpoint, hitting .294, while the Phoenix hit .200. Green Bay didn't help themselves either, committing 19 errors.
Set two (25-16) saw the Phoenix bounce back to tie the match back up. Neither team stood out during this set. Green Bay only had a .195 hitting percentage, but Indiana State couldn't seem to find things offensively, hitting .000. The Sycamores poor offense and 6 kills from
Taylor Wolf propelled the Phoenix to take the set.
Set three (25-18) was knotted up at 12-12 until the Phoenix went on a 5-0 run to take control.Â
Shannon Coughlin led the team on offense with 5 kills, and the squad had a hitting percentage of .333 during the set. Freshman libero
Brenna Hesse came up big for Green Bay defensively, claiming 6 of the 14 digs.
Set four (23-25) had Indiana State take an early 4-0 lead, but Green Bay went on a 4-0 run of their own after a timeout by Coach Sutherland to tie things up. The set was close the whole way, with both teams each logging 13 kills. However, the Phoenix hitting percentage of .070 and 10 attack-errors cost them the set.
Set five (15-9) was dominated by Green Bay and had them lead in every statistical category. Five players contributed kills during the set, and seven recorded digs defensively. Junior
Anna Eaton also had a huge ace during the set to help the Phoenix take the set and the match.
The Green Bay defense once again stood on its head.Â
Brenna Hesse tallied a career-high 27 digs for the team, while junior defensive specialist
Micaela Kent also had a career-high in digs with 14. Junior
Emily Lautenschlager added double-digits digs and
Taylor Wolf totalled 9 as well. Once again,
Anna Eaton and
Ashley Sledge dominated defensively at the net for the Phoenix, totaling 10 of the teams 20 block-assist.
