Green Bay Gets Back to Winning Ways, Sweeps Saint Louis 3-0

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)--- The Green Bay volleyball team took the victory in their final match of nonconference play with a win over Saint Louis (25-18, 25-17, 25-19).

Green Bay 3, Saint Louis 0
Green Bay got back to their winning ways with this evening's win over Saint Louis tonight.  Both sides of the net were much more efficient than previous matches.  The Phoenix earned 16 more kills, 10 more assist, and 6 more block-assist than the Billikens.  Junior Taylor Wolf walked away with another double-double on the season with 10 kills and 11 digs.  Both sophomore Alexis Dorner and junior Ashley Sledge contributed 7 kills, followed by Zoi Sherolli with 6.  Senior setter Maddie Yoss had 27 of the team's 35 assist and tied her season-high of 5 kills in the match.

Defensively, freshman libero Brenna Hesse led the way with 16 digs.  Hesse's stellar performance all weekend allowed her to claim All-Tournament honors, the first of her young career.  Senior Emily Lautenschlager added double-digit digs as well with 10 and freshman Annelise Sparks claimed 9 of her own.  The team took home 11 total-blocks, with Anna Eaton earning 8 block-assist on the evening.

Set one (25-18) was controlled from start to finish by the Phoenix.  Saint Louis tied the set three different times, but Green Bay never surrendered the lead.  Additionally, the squad was in full attack-mode, tallying 45 total-attacks and hitting a .267 percentage.  Six different players earned kills for the Phoenix, with Taylor Wolf logging 5 and Maddie Yoss having 4.  The team was solid defensively as well, having five players earn block-assist and eight players contribute to the team's 20 digs.

Set two (25-17) saw the Phoenix carry the momentum from the first set to take care of business in the second.  The Billikens grabbed the first point of the set but once the Phoenix took the lead, they never gave it up.  Neither team was very efficient offensively, but Green Bay owned 5 more kills than Saint Louis and suffered 5 less attack-errors.  The Billikens also committed five service-errors.  Alexis Dorner led the squad in kills during the set with 3, while Brenna Hesse led the team defensively with 8 digs.

Set three (25-19) had the Phoenix take the set and claim the match.  The team came out on a slower start in the third set and trailed 3-7 early on.  After a timeout by Coach Sutherland, Green Bay tied the match up at 10-10.  The squad then went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-10 lead in the set.  Once the Phoenix seized control after the run, the Billikens couldn't recover.

Green Bay finished up nonconference play with an 8-4 record, which consisted of two top-10 ranked teams in the country(Pittsburgh and Marquette), along with the defending MVC regular season and tournament champions (Northern Iowa), and a 2018 NIVC tournament team (Fresno State).  The Phoenix will look to carry their early success into conference play.
