DAYTON, Ohio. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The holiday weekend took Green Bay (0-7, 0-3 HL) to Dayton, Ohio, for two games with preseason favorite Wright State (5-1, 3-0 HL), as the Raiders took the opener after a strong second half, 67-53.
It was all defense in the early going at the Nutter Center, with the largest lead of the first half being owned by the Phoenix, 11-5. At the break, the teams were separated by a single possession with Wright State clinging to a two-point advantage, 23-21.
Paris Taylor knotted things at 28-28 early in the second half after corralling an offensive rebound and rising up for the putback. Two-straight buckets from
Terrance Thompson and a jumper from
Amari Davis helped GB keep pace as the Raiders offense began to heat up with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Wright State used a 10-2 run which spanned over two minutes to take control, leading the Phoenix 49-40 with less than 10 minutes left.
The closest Green Bay would come in the final minutes was six points, 53-47, after another jumper from Davis pushed the sophomore guard into double figures for the fifth time this season, and Thompson split at the line.
The Raiders secured their fifth-straight win and moved to 3-0 in HL play with a 67-53 victory.
Davis led the Phoenix with 13 points and was joined in double figures by
PJ Pipes, who added 11 to the Phoenix tally.
Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year Loudon Love (17pts, 14reb) and teammate Tanner Holden (18pts, 10rebs) provided the Raiders with double-doubles. WSU enjoyed four double-digit scorers on the afternoon.
Green Bay closes out the holiday weekend and 2020 tomorrow afternoon with another pairing against Wright State, as tip-off at the Nutter Center is slated for 1 p.m. (CT).
