FARGO, ND --- After trailing by as many as 18 points in the third quarter, the Green Bay women's basketball team climbed back to within one possession against North Dakota State on Saturday afternoon before eventually falling 59-51 at the Scheels Center in Fargo.
GB (1-1) opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run and scored 8 of the first 10 points to make a comeback bid in its first road contest of the season. NDSU (2-0) was able to fend off the comeback though, thanks to 11 made 3s and an 18-for-20 effort at the free throw line. The Phoenix outscored the Bison in the second half by eight, after trailing 34-18 at the half.
Hibner, the HL's reigning Player of the Week, led GB with 13 points and four rebounds. Freshman
Ellie Foster netted 8 points in her second collegiate game, while
Meghan Pingel and Lydsey Robson each added seven points of their own.
The 3s weren't falling for the Phoenix, which finished just 2-19 from deep. GB was cold overall in the game as well, shooting just 30 percent (20-66) on the day. Per usual, the Phoenix defense did its part in forcing 25 turnovers, and turned that into 22 points on the other end. GB also dominated in the paint, outscoring NDSU 36-8 in that category.
NDSU used a 13-0 run in the first half to open a big lead, beating GB 19-5 in the second quarter.
The HL's Freshman of the Week put in other solid performance, with
Jasmine Kondrakiewicz scoring 9 points and grabbing 6 rebounds before fouling out.
Michelle Gaislerova led NDSU with 23 points on 7 made 3-pointers.
The Phoenix and Bison will battle again tomorrow on the same court. Tip is set for 1 p.m. CT.
