BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) — The Green Bay softball team took the diamond for its fourth and fifth game in three days against Indiana State and Ball State. The Sycamores defeated the Phoenix, 9-7, before the Cardinals were able to hold off the GB and earn a trip to the Hilltopper Classic Championship, 9-8.
Indiana State 9, Green Bay 7
The Sycamores plated two runs in the first inning, but the Phoenix cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the frame when Morgan Bihun singled to the pitcher and allowed Bailey Schultz to touch home.
Indiana State had two more runs cross the plate in the second, placing GB at a 4-1 disadvantage.
Green Bay's Greta Thompson hit her first home run of the year in the fifth inning, sending a deep fly ball over the center field fence to decreases the disadvantage to two runs.
The Sycamores erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to create separation from the Phoenix at 9-2 with only three GB outs remaining.
Green Bay nearly rallied past Indiana State with a five-run seventh inning outburst, but the Sycamores held on for the victory, 9-7.
Thompson scored two of the Phoenix runs and notched a pair of RBIs. Bailey Schultz recorded the only multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.
Ball State 9, Green Bay 8
The Cardinals earned the No. 1 seed after finishing 3-0 against the other teams in round robin play and were matched up with No. 4 Green Bay for a trip to the championship.
Ball State struck first with one run in the opening frame, but the Phoenix responded nicely by plating two in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.
The Cardinals answered immediately with three runs and regained control at 4-2.
Two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth had given Ball State a commanding lead at 9-2 needing only three outs to preserve the win.
Green Bay refused to give the Cardinals and easy win as its offense came out firing in its final at-bats. All told, the Phoenix brought six runs across the plate in the last inning and nearly upset the tournament's top seed.
Western Kentucky 3, Green Bay 0
Green Bay concluded its action in the Hilltopper Classic on Sunday morning in the consolation game, falling to host WKU 3-0.
Rebecca Radtke, Kalyssa Koehn and Becca Edwards notched the three Phoenix hits in the matchup.
Brittany Baneck and Kayla Schwebke split work in the circle, with Baneck throwing for 4.0 innings and Schwebke dealing for 2.0.
