Green Bay Beats RMU in Five Sets, Earns No. 5 Seed in #HLVB Championship this Weekend

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA --The Green Bay volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to notch a come-from-behind 3-2 victory (24-26, 17-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-6) over the Robert Morris Colonials Sunday on the road at the UPMC Events Center in the regular season finale.

The win caps the Phoenix's record at 15-15 overall and 10-8 in Horizon League play, earning the team the No. 5 seed in the upcoming 2021 Horizon League Championship this weekend. GB will face No. 4 seed UIC on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Quarterfinals at the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee, as the Panthers won the regular season title and the No. 1 seed with the right to host.

The victory also marked the 250th career win for head coach Abbey Sutherland, who hits an impressive milestone as the leader of the Phoenix back in the league tournament once again. 

 

The Phoenix was led by a double-double from Alexandra Zakutney, who registered 22 kills and 12 digs on the day. Shannon Coughlin also added 15 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Isis Rabello chipped in for GB with 12 digs to go with five blocks from Coughlin.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Phoenix battled back from a seven-point 21-14 deficit, but Robert Morris held on to win the first set 26-24.

SET 2 | Green Bay dropped the second set 25-17, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. The Phoenix dropped the first point and never took the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | After falling in the opening two sets, Green Bay fought back to take the third set and make it a 2-1 match. The Phoenix won the set 25-21 propelled by a strong showing on the attacking end. Green Bay registered a .355 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands four times, the Phoenix took control for good at 15-14 and rode that advantage to victory.

SET 4 | Green Bay continued their comeback, winning the fourth set 25-19 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. A solid showing on the attacking side led the Phoenix to victory in the set. Green Bay registered a .400 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set win. The Phoenix ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.

SET 5 | Green Bay dropped the first two sets, but mounted a furious rally to win the last three sets, culminating in a 15-6 fifth-set victory, and take the match 3-2. The Phoenix scored first and never trailed in set five to earn the victory. Green Bay ended on a high note, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, nine points, to finish off the set, totaling 11 kills in the process.
