Second Half Surge Propels Phoenix Past UW-Superior

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Phoenix men's basketball team grabbed their first win of the season, 77-48, over the Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets at home on Saturday.

Green Bay (1-5) had three players score in double figures, including Emmanuel Ansong, who led the way with 14 points and three offensive rebounds while collecting seven total. Cem Kirciman tacked on 12 points off the bench and Lucas Stieber chipped in with 10 points, four assists and two blocks.

The Phoenix collected 42 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Wisconsin-Superior's 18, led by Ansong's seven boards. Green Bay also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 19 second chance points.
 


HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling behind 17-16, Green Bay went on a 10-0 run with 9:06 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Donovan Ivory, to take a 26-17 lead. The Phoenix then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 40-31 advantage. Green Bay did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 24 of its 40 points close to the basket.

Green Bay kept its lead intact before going on a 15-0 run, finished off by Stieber's three, to grow the lead to 64-42 with 6:40 to go in the contest. The Phoenix kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 77-48 win. Green Bay got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 17 of its 37 total points.

GAME NOTES

» Green Bay found success from beyond the arc, knocking down eight treys in the game.
» The Phoenix tallied 18 total assists in the game.
» Green Bay registered the largest point differential (+20) of the season in a single half, outscoring UW-Superior 37-17 in the second.
» The Green Bay bench came alive, adding 34 points to its scoring output.
» The Phoenix shot a season-high 84-percent at the charity stripe.
» Green Bay had a 42-18 edge on the boards in the win.
» Cem Kirciman scored a career-high 12 points. 
» Ansong's seven rebounds and 27 minutes were team-highs.
» With his four assists, Lucas Stieber now has 30 in six games (5.0 APG), and is on pace to surpass his 100 assists from last year. 

UP NEXT

The Phoenix continue their three-game home stand next Thursday, December 2, when they open Horizon League play against Robert Morris. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Resch Center. The home stand wraps up on Saturday, December 4, against Youngstown State. Tipoff for that game is slated for 6 p.m. at the Kress Center.
