SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
The Jackrabbits are coming off a very successful 2020-21 season in which they made the NCAA Tournament. They finished the regular season 21-4 overall, with three wins over top-25 teams in Iowa State, Gonzaga, and Missouri State. South Dakota State returns their highest scorer from last year, Myah Selland, who averaged 19.2 points per game in 2020, and paced the Jackrabbits in rebounds, minutes, and field-goals made. The Jackrabbits were selected to finish second in the Summit League's preseason coaches' poll.
LAST TIME OUT
Green Bay wrapped up exhibition action last Wednesday with an 83-48 win over UW-Platteville. Green Bay set the tone early on a 13-0 run, scoring 24 of their 31 first-quarter points in the paint. The Phoenix scored 34 points off of 27 Platteville turnovers, and held the Pioneers to 37.5 percent shooting. The Phoenix started out the second half with a 9-0 run, and never looked back.
LOOK AROUND THE LEAGUE
10 of the 12 Horizon League teams play nonconference matchups as the regular season begins Tuesday night. Some intriguing games include Horizon League preseason favorite IUPUI taking on Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Oakland hosting the University of Toledo.
FRESH FACES
Green Bay welcomes four true freshmen to the 2021-22 squad.
Callie Genke, a 6-0 guard, is one of those aforementioned freshmen. Genke prepped at Freedom High school where she was a two-time First Team All-Conference selection, as well as a two-time All-State team selection.
Bailey Butler, a 5-7 guard hailing from South Wayne, Wis. comes to the Phoenix from Black Hawk High school. Butler led Black Hawk to a Division 5 state championship in 2019 and received an All-State selection for it.
Jenna Guyer, a 6-2 forward comes to Green Bay from Circle Pines, Minn. Guyer led Centennial High school to a Minnesota Class AAAA State Championship third place finish, and was named All-State Honorable Mention in 2020.
Maddy Schreiber, a 6-0 guard/forward rounds out the 2021-22 recruiting class for GB. Schreiber prepped at Kimberly High school where she was twice named Second Team All-Conference, once named First Team All-Conference, and received an All-State Honorable Mention selection as well.
FAMILIAR FACES
The Phoenix will return three of its five main starters from a 2020-21 season that saw the team finish third in the Horizon with a 14-4 conference record.
Highlighting the Green Bay returners is redshirt-senior
Meghan Pingel, who was selected to the HL Preseason All-League Second Team. Pingel will play a large role for the Phoenix, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Last year she started in all 22 games and swiped a team-high 42 steals. On the offensive end, she averaged 5.2 points per game, 4.9 assists per game, and 2.8 rebounds per game.
Another name Green Bay will look to add stability is
Hailey Oskey. Last season Oskey started in all 16 games she appeared in, averaging 7.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
Jasmine Kondrakiewicz is the third starter returning for GB. Kondrakiewicz offers a big presence for the Phoenix inside, scoring 7.5 points and 3.8 rebounds a season ago. The freshman also blocked a team-high 19 shots on the year.
Sydney Levy and
Cassie Schiltz are two other Phoenix that saw starts in the 2020-21 season and will look to make a heightened impact this year. Other returners include
Brooklyn Blackburn,
Ellie Foster,
Julia Hartwig,
Caelan Givens, and
Kendall Renard.
