Penguins' Hot-Shooting Hands Phoenix Road Loss

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Green Bay women's basketball team continued their road trip at Youngstown State Saturday afternoon, falling to the Penguins 67-58. Youngstown State has started the season 7-0 and sits atop the Horizon.

The Phoenix (4-4, 2-2) got huge contributions from their three true freshmen, led by Bailey Butler, who had a career-high 14 points, six rebounds and two steals. Callie Genke also tacked on  a career-high 12 points, and Maddy Schreiber added seven points and eight rebounds.

The Green Bay offense made hay from downtown, pouring in 10 threes on 28 attempts. Butler hit four treys for the Phoenix in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling behind 3-2, Green Bay went on a 5-0 run with 6:28 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Hailey Oskey, to take a 7-3 lead. The Phoenix surrendered that lead before quarter's end and entered the second quarter down 13-12.

The Phoenix continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 37-26 halftime deficit.

Green Bay came out of halftime on fire, hitting back-to-back threes, punctuated by a three from Genke, to trim its deficit to 37-32 with 8:57 to go in the third. Youngstown State countered and stretched its lead to 53-47 heading into the fourth. Green Bay knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter to score 15 of its 21 total points.

The Phoenix offense never found its footing in the fourth quarter, losing by a final of 67-58. Green Bay got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 11 total points.

GAME NOTES

» Green Bay lit it up from three point land, tying a season-high with 10 treys in the game.
» The Phoenix put on a passing clinic, recording an assist on 79 percent of made baskets.
» GB tied a season-high with 15 assists.
» The Green Bay bench made an impact by adding 30 points to its scoring output.
» Green Bay out-rebounded Youngstown State 36-34.
» Green Bay got a team-high eight rebounds from Maddy Schreiber.
» Meghan Pingel contributed in multiple areas, with two points, six assists, and four rebounds.
» GB surrendered a sesson-high 15 made threes. No other team had hit double-digit threes against the Phoenix.
» The Penguins shot 45.5-percent from three, to go with 44.2-percent from the floor.
» Saturday's loss was just the fifth in program history to Youngstown State (46 games played).

UP NEXT
Green Bay will have a full-week to prepare for the final game of the five-game road trip at Wisconsin on Sunday, Dec. 12. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. in Madison. Following, the Phoenix returns home to host Chicago State on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m.
